The Digital Future of Museums: Conversations and Provocations argues that museums today can neither ignore the importance of digital technologies when engaging their communities, nor fail to address the broader social, economic and cultural changes that shape their digital offerings. This book constitutes the post-conference proceedings of the First International Conference on Emerging Technologies and the Digital Transformation of Museums and Heritage Sites, RISE IMET 2020, held in Nicosia, Cyprus, in June 2021*. The 23 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 38 submissions. This book focuses on digital museums in the context of Vietnam and contributes to global discussions on the development of digital museum offerings needed to meet audience demands, requirements for sustainable digitisation methods for cultural heritage, demands for the development of intellectual property protection for the digital environment, and shows ways for national governments to support digital museums. Duester provides insight into museums in part of the Global South, where infrastructure funding and technical and human resource constraints impact the take-up and display of digital content. With on-the-ground research from three Vietnamese museums, Duester argues for a museum framework that is sustainable, ethical, and culturally appropriate. The Vietnamese government’s strategy for digitalisation of culture, heritage, and museums is assessed, and the book includes a list of recommendations on sustainable digitisation methods, intellectual property protection measures for the digital environment, management, phygital business models, and new digital revenue streams. Museums and the Challenge of Change explores the profound challenges facing museums and charts ways forward that are grounded in partnership with audiences and communities on-site, online, and in wider society. Facing new generations with growing needs and desires, growing population diversity, and a digital revolution, the museum sector knows it must change – but it has been slow to respond. Drawing on the expertise and voices of practitioners from within and beyond the sector, Black calls for a change of mind-set and radical evolution (transformation over time, learning from the process, rather than a ‘big bang’ approach). The Museums and Collections of Higher Education provides an analysis of the historic connections between materiality and higher education, developed through diverse examples of global practice. Outlining the different value propositions that museums and collections bring to higher education, the historic link between objects, evidence and academic knowledge is examined with reference to the origin point of both types of organisation. Museums and collections bring institutional reflection, cross-disciplinary bridges, digital extension options and participatory potential. Given the two primary sources of text and object, a singular source type predisposes a knowledge system to epistemic stasis, whereas mixed sources develop the potential for epistemic disruption and possible change. Museums and collections, therefore, are essential in the academies of higher learning. With the many challenges confronting humanity, it is argued that connecting intellect with social action for societal change through university museums should be a contemporary manifestation of the social contract of universities. Much has been written about museums and universities, but there is little about university museums and collections. This book will interest museum scholars and practitioners especially those unaware that university museums are at the forefront of museological creativity. Digital Futures for Learning offers a methodological and pedagogical way forward for researchers and educators who want to work imaginatively with "what’s next" in higher education and informal learning.
