The Disobedient Generation collects newly written autobiographies by an international cross-section of well-known sociologists, all of them "children of the '60s". It illuminates the human experience of living through that decade as apprentice scholars and activists, encountering the issues of class, race, the Establishment, the decline of traditional religion, feminism, war, and the sexual revolution. In each case the interlinked crises of young adulthood, rapid change, and nascent professional careers shaped this generation's private and public selves.

The study of consumption in social life is growing. Moving from being a relatively unimportant part of the processes of production, distribution, and exchange, questions of how people consume and to what ends now occupy center stage. Today's capitalism is exemplified by a global arena of consumption in which distance is no obstacle to distribution and ownership. Equally, social distinctions that accompanied classically "modern" forms of consumption are now more complex and fluid than classifications of "high" and "popular" culture allow.This book addresses the rise of consumer culture and the various attempts to explain and account for it. It considers the view that a particular generational framework was formed in the post-war period and has been carried on into the early twentieth century with particular consequences for the experience of later life. The rise of individualism, of mass consumption, leisure and lifestyles have been accompanied by the democratization of social forms and for many a corrosion of community and social cohesion. The text highlights how understanding is gained from examining the generational habits that developed in tandem with the rise of mass consumption.Drawing on historical perspectives and comparative studies, the book addresses social change with reference to generation effects and conflict. Having set the scene in terms of the literature on consumption, lifestyles and generational change, the volume poses key questions in relation to the transformation of later life that are addressed in turn by the contributors. It has often been observed that Jesus’ filial obedience is an important Matthean theme. In this work the author argues that the articulation of Jesus as Son of God in Matthew is significantly influenced by the Deuteronomic concept of obedient sonship. After noting the complexities of Matthew’s use of Scripture – including the subtle ways he engages texts – Deuteronomy’s pervasive influence in ancient Judaism and Christianity is considered. It is argued that the requirement of Israel’s covenantal obedience as God’s son(s) is a major concern in Deuteronomy, as well as in other Jewish and Christian texts that appear to echo Deuteronomy. Indeed, it is argued that a pattern can be detected in which the sonship of Israel is invoked either to summon Israel to obedience, or to rebuke the nation for disobedience. The author concludes that the necessity of Israel’s obedient sonship is an important part of Matthew’s interpretive milieu that derives ultimately from Deuteronomy, and our understanding of Matthean Christology is greatly enhanced when viewed in this context. This study may further help us understand why Matthew’s concern with obedient sonship applies not only to Jesus uniquely, but also to the early Christian community.

During Ed's study of the book of Daniel, there were four chapters that were different from the other chapters. Chapter 3 related to Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego, and chapter 6 was about Daniel. In his study, it became clear that Daniel and his three friends were special in God's eye. These four individuals, after being taken from Jerusalem to Babylon, were given special treatment from their captors. They were also miraculously saved from horrible deaths and, in the case of Daniel, elevated to a position of high authority in the Babylonian government. What was it about these four individuals that made them special to God? They weren't royalty or heroes; they hadn't won any battles. In fact, they were just teenagers when they were taken captive. What set them apart from the others was their willingness to defy the orders of the Babylonian rulers when those orders conflicted with their relationship with God. As Ed continued his study of Daniel, he was continuously drawn back to these two chapters until he realized the chapters were not so much about Daniel and his friends, as it was about their relationship with and their faith in God. This raised a lot of questions for him. He wanted to know what the basis for their special relationship with God was. He wanted to know what made their faith special to God and what was it about their faith that was different from his faith. He wanted to know why God answered their prayers and seemed to not answer the prayers of so many people he knows, as well as many of his own. He also wondered why these chapters on faith were included in a book that was primarily a prophetic book. Searching for answers to these questions, Ed quickly realized he didn't know what God had to say about faith or why faith is important to Him. The next question was, if he didn't know what God had to say about faith, what kind of faith did he have? Did he have the faith to accept Christ as his LORD and Savior? The answer was yes, but what else? Also, where does he go with his faith from here? And finally, how does he get the faith of Daniel and his friends? These questions and more started Ed's study of faith which ultimately led him to write this book.
