In Humanitarian Law in Action within Africa, Jennifer Moore studies the role and application of humanitarian law by focusing on African countries that are emerging from civil wars. Moore offers an overview of international law, including its essential vocabulary, and describes four particular subfields of international law: international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international refugee law. After setting forth this overview, Moore considers practical mechanisms to implement international humanitarian law, focusing specifically on the experiences of Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Burundi. Through the case studies of these countries, Moore describes transitional justice's fundamental components: criminal, social, and historical. Although the African continent has gone through some of the world's greatest humanitarian emergencies, issues such as violence against women, child soldiers, and genocide are not unique to Africa, and as such, the study of humanitarian law by examining Africa's experience is important to conflict resolution and reconstruction throughout the world.

This book argues that Sierra Leone’s ten-year civil conflict demonstrates the criticality of freedom of information (FOI) as a facet of good governance where corruption thrives, spanning both public and private sectors, if Sierra Leone’s continued security and stability are to be ensured. It argues that it was the absence of an anti-corruption tool like FOI and its attendants, transparency, and accountability, in governance generally, and in the area of the extractive industry in particular, that lead to other social phenomena which directly sparked the war. It proffers that for the continued consolidation of peace, security, stability and development in Sierra Leone, transparency and accountability must be ensured by protecting and implementing the demand driven anti-graft FOI. Straddling the disciplines of law, political science, public policy, and history, the book’s major premise is that it was the absence of FOI in the area of governance and the extractive industry, which enabled politicians, civil servants and the politically connected to ransom and exploit Sierra Leone’s mineral resources for their own profit with impunity, a state of affairs which led to underdevelopment, state collapse and an embittered civil populace especially the youth. The book postulates that as such any attempt to ensure long-term peace in Sierra Leone, should seek to avoid replicating the conditions that gave rise to that gruesome conflict- elites expropriation of national resources through endemic graft. The book proposes the comprehensive and effective implementation of the Right to Information Act 2013.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in East Asian regionalism, combining qualitative evidence with empirical quantitative analysis. It argues that two dominant processes have formed East Asian regionalism: 1) regionalization, and 2) inter-regionalism. Klecha-Tylec examines the differences between traditional and new regionalisms as they apply to East Asia; the differences between East Asian and European regionalism; the role of the United States in shaping regional links; and the evolution of the three key structures of ASEAN, ASEAN+3, and Asia Summits. The book is unique for examining together the network, zonal, and geospatial dimensions of relations in East Asia as they apply at micro-regional, sub-regional, macro-regional, trans-regional and inter-regional levels. Sierra Leone is a country located in West Africa, bordered to the north and northeast by Guinea, to the southeast by Liberia, and to the west and southwest by the Atlantic Ocean. The country has a tropical climate characterized by two seasons: the dry season from November to April, and the wet season from May to October. The official language is English, although Krio, a Creole language, is widely spoken. Sierra Leone has a diverse population made up of Temne, Mende, Limba, and Krio peoples, among others. Sierra Leone gained independence from Britain in 1961 and experienced a period of political instability and civil war, which lasted from 1991 to 2002. The civil war was fought between government forces and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a rebel group that aimed to overthrow the government. The conflict was characterized by violent attacks on civilians, including chopping off limbs, sexual violence, and the use of child soldiers. Since the end of the war, Sierra Leone has made progress in democratization and economic development, although it still faces challenges such as poverty, corruption, and high youth unemployment rates.

Various arguments have been proffered to explain the dynamics of African state failure and collapse. However, the literature on state reconstitution is inchoate and minimal. This edited volume focuses on prescriptions for reconstituting the post-colonial state in Africa. Essays on nine African states (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, and Uganda) are preceded by an introduction to the political economy of the African state.
