The Economic Function Of A Stock Exchange

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In recent years, exchanges on both sides of the Atlantic have been extensively reengineered, and their organizational structures have changed from non-profit, membership organizations to for-profit, demutualized organizations. Concurrently, new alternative trading systems have emerged and the traditional functions of broker/dealer firms have evolved. How have these changes affected the delivery of that mission? How has the efficiency of capital raising in the IPO market been impacted? These are among the key questions addressed in this book, titled after the Baruch College Conference, The Economic Function of a Stock Market. Featuring contributions from a panel of scholars, academicians, policymakers, and industry leaders, this volume examines current issues affecting market quality, including challenges in the marketplace, growth opportunities, and IPO capital raising in the global economy. The Zicklin School of Business Financial Markets Series presents the insights emerging from a sequence of conferences hosted by the Zicklin School at Baruch College for industry professionals, regulators, and scholars. Much more than historical documents, the transcripts from the conferences are edited for clarity, perspective and context; material and comments from subsequent interviews with the panelists and speakers are integrated for a complete thematic presentation. Each book is focused on a well delineated topic, but all deliver broader insights into the quality and efficiency of the U.S. equity markets and the dynamic forces changing them.

The Economic Function Of Futures Markets

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book offers an explanation of why commodity processors and dealers use futures markets. It argues that they use futures contracts as part of an implicit method of borrowing and lending commodities, contrary to the accepted view of dealers averse to the fluctuating value of their inventories wanting insurance against price risk. Employing models developed to explain the demand for money, this book demonstrates that risk-neutral dealers have sufficient reason to use futures markets. Moreover, the book exposes major internal inconsistencies in the accepted explanation. Rather than insurance markets, the appropriate analogy is the money market, which is the point the book establishes through discussing actual loan markets in commodities. This insight into the function of futures markets is then used to explain how futures prices for different delivery dates express a term structure of commodity-specific interest rates and why futures markets flourish for some types of commodities and not for others.

The Economic Function Of Deferred Taxes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Deferred tax is an accounting category that forms part of tax expense and affects the reported amounts of profit after tax for businesses. This book explores the issue of deferred taxes at both the theoretical and practical levels, and investigates the financial aspects of such deferred taxes and their economic function in companies. In practical terms, it discusses specific circumstances leading to the creation of deferred tax and their economic function. The first chapter deals with regulatory issues concerning deferred taxes and accounting, specifically noting the accrual principle and different policies for charging, as well as the valuation of fair-value accounting. The second concentrates on such problems as changes in value based on depreciation, and changes in asset revaluation changes in long-term tangible and financial assets. This is followed by a chapter focusing on the problem of an effective income tax rate. The fourth chapter traces the specific practical use and form of economic functions of deferred taxes, and solves the problem of the equitable tax burden, as well as the distribution of this burden when changing the tax rate. Overall, the book defines, analyses, synthesises and compares current methods and the role of deferred taxes in the management of companies.

Italian Banking And Financial Law Intermediaries And Markets

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In today's increasingly global and integrated financial climate, there is an amplified need for cooperation between regulators and supervisors across the globe in order to promote economic growth and maintain competitive markets. However, idiosyncrasies remain within local markets, and for those wishing to participate within them, it is necessary to understand the distinctive qualities of each. This book explores the intermediaries of the Italian financial system. It examines the banks, investment services, electronic payment institutions, insurance companies and credit rating agencies functioning in the country, to explore how Italian regulation functions within the context of a wider harmonizing trend. The authors present a study on the current control models of the Italian markets in the wake of changes induced by the privatization of public banks, the increased size and complexity of the intermediaries, the increased level of competition, and the internationalization of the financial innovation. They explain how the country's financial markets are controlled by a combination of bodies, including the State, the authorities and the market participants themselves.
