The Euro Crisis And European Identities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book builds upon our knowledge of the far-reaching economic, political and social effects of the Euro crisis on the European Union by providing a unique study of European identities. In particular, it considers the impact on the construction of European identities in political and media discourse in Germany, Ireland and Poland—three countries with profoundly different experiences of the crisis and never before compared in a single study. Offering an original insight into the dynamics of identity change at moments of upheaval, the author argues that political and media actors in the early stages of the crisis drew on long-standing identities in order to make sense of the crisis in the public sphere. European identity discourses are thus resilient to change but become central to legitimising and contesting bailouts and further economic integration. As such, the author challenges the commonly held view that identities change dramatically at times of crisis but argues that this very resilience helps to understand the EU’s current divisions. The study of identity during the Euro crisis sheds important light on the prospects for European solidarity as well as on the future of the single currency as an identity-building project. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in the fields of EU politics, comparative European politics, and identity politics.

The Euro Crisis Institutional And Structural Problems Responsible For The Euro Crisis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 39.5/40, University of Queensland, language: English, abstract: Although catalysed by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2008, substantial responsibility for the Euro crisis can be attributed to the institutional and structural problems entrenched in the design of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The crisis led to subdued growth and record levels of unemployment in the economies of Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain – collectively known as the GIIPS – and the wider eurozone. The beginnings of the crisis were in the sovereign debt problems of these countries, the causes of which varied from successive unsustainable government deficits in Greece, to bank guarantees and bailouts shifting private debt into public hands in Ireland and Spain. What these sovereign debt crises had in common, however, were the structural and institutional problems of the EMU, which both created the conditions for, and prevented the recovery of, the wider Euro crisis. This essay will outline these problems. First, institutions and structures in the political economy will be briefly defined. Secondly, the inability of a united monetary policy to cater for the differences between northern and southern European varieties of capitalism will be examined. Thirdly, the structures and institutions hindering a swift and effective economic recovery will be outlined. Finally, the viability of proposed recovery approaches will be evaluated.

Is The Crisis Of Confidence In The Eu Over European Identity And The Image Of The Eu

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, Manipal University (MCES), course: MA European Studies, language: English, abstract: In February 1992, it was mutually decided among twelve member states of the European Union to introduce the Euro by 2002, with signing of the Maastricht treaty. Although, this was a monetary action taken by the Union, many consider it as a historical step towards building a common European identity. The polling data as of now reaffirms the same as most of the European citizens state that the Euro symbolizes the European Union (European Commission, 2014). It is further observed through surveys that European citizens did feel European initially; however there was a sharp decline in the feeling of being European and support for the European institutions after the euro crisis. The idea behind creating a common market 1957 through the Treaty of Rome was that participating member states would be benefited through economic integration. European citizens seemed to lose their faith in that idea with the eruption of the euro crisis. Many have observed that the European Union is not only going through financial and identity crisis but also facing the crisis of confidence. "The European Union is the new sick man of Europe" (PEW Global, 2013). The crisis of confidence is not only limited to the European Union functioning but people are losing confidence in the political and financial elites and other European Union institution as well. There is wide gap between decision makers in Brussels and the citizens. In a nutshell, its democratic deficit, global economic situation, debt crisis, mismanagement and lack of integration and harmonization in certain areas are causing the European Union to face financial, identity, confidence crisis at the same time. The recent survey by the European commission and PEW research center show that citizen's confidence has increased since the new commission took offi

United By Or Against Euroscepticism An Assessment Of Public Attitudes Towards Europe In The Context Of The Crisis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book sheds light on the future of the European Union in a critical context marked by what appears to be a “never-ending” crisis of leadership and legitimacy. Will anti-European views and their corollary, such as Euro-populism, Euro-denial, and Euro-cynicisms along with all types of nationalisms, crush or further consolidate the European project? The volume offers detailed analyses of various dimensions of Euroscepticism in the context of the greatest economic crisis in the history of the EU. Divided into four sections, the first brings together general theoretical and empirical perspectives on Euroscepticism, building on existing studies. The second section focuses on the effects of the current economic crisis on Eurosceptic attitudes, while the third explores the marginal impact of Euroscepticism by analysing this phenomenon in countries that have recently joined the EU, such as Romania, and others in which membership is a debated issue and which may use the former’s experience as a model, such as Turkey or Ukraine. Finally, the concluding part discusses the consequences of Euroscepticism for the unity of Europe and the global role and relevance of the EU.

The Search For A European Identity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines the link between political identity and legitimacy in the European Union. Stimulated by the crisis of legitimacy and identity suffered by the EU after the referenda on the Constitutional Treaty, the editors have developed a theoretical framework to examine the interplay between these two items in the problematic development of the EU into a fully-fledged political actor. The contributors to the volume seek to: Redefine the key notions in the rigorous way of political philosophy, thus avoiding the generic or imprecise language usage found in a large part of political science literature on identity Test these concepts in the analysis of EU policies that may reveal the world views and the principles upon which EU legislation is based, and whose degree of acceptance on the side of the citizens is an indicator of how far a shared political identity has developed. Featuring case studies on foreign and environmental policy, biosafety policy, biotechnology regulation, civil society, human rights promotion, as well as studies on the role of memory, space and external views on the process of European identity-building, this book will be of interest to students and researchers of political science, political philosophy, European politics and European Studies.
