BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume presents a new perspective for discussing the European social contract and its main challenges, bringing together single-nation and comparative studies from across Europe. Presenting both theoretical discussions and empirical case studies, it explores various aspects of social cohesion, including social protection, the labour market, social movements, healthcare, social inequalities and poverty. With particular attention to the effects of the international economic and financial crisis on social cohesion, particularly in the light of the implementation of so-called ’austerity measures’, authors engage with questions surrounding the possible fragmentation of the European model of social cohesion and the transformation of forms of social protection, asking whether social cohesion continues to represent - if it ever did - a common feature of European countries. Breaking new ground in understanding the future of Social Europe and its main dynamics of change, The European Social Model Adrift will appeal to scholars of sociology, social policy and politics, with interests in social cohesion, the effects of financial crisis and the European social model.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book presents a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of the processes of liberalization and privatization, and their consequences for economic performance, social cohesion and political democracy in the European Union. It examines the main drivers and the various theoretical rationales for privatisation in the context of different schools of thinking. It argues on the basis of broad empirical evidence that privatisation in Europe, particularly the ongoing privatization of social services, undermines the basic elements of the different social models that have developed in Europe. These arguments are supported by a number of in-depth case studies, with specific focus on health care, education and finance. The authors of this volume advance from this critique and explore the basic requirements for a progressive public sector and its role for economic, social and democratic development. This book will be indispensable reading for all interested in Economic Policy, Public Sector Economics, European Integration and Political Science.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The work presented here has the ambitious objective to analyse a highly topical issue not in the usual terms of finding an immediate answer to pressing questions of political urgency, but to find such answers notwithstanding the abstract approach of a fundamental reinterpretation of the issue in question. The topical side of the question is focussing on services of general interest, a matter that is closely linked to the European strategy of market liberalisation and to what is called the European Social Model. In this sense, the question of services of general interest, and with this the question of social services as specific form of services of general interest is path-dependent, linked to the orientation of European integration as establishing a single market, based on the four fundamental freedoms, namely the: free movement of capital; free movement of goods; freedom of movement for workers and freedom of establishment and provision of services and mutual recognition of diplomas.
