Perspectives On The Educational Experiences Of African Caribbean Boys

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This study critically explores contemporary African/Caribbean boys’ (15–16 years old) educational experiences in the UK. It focuses on their lives from both within and outside the school. Various research methods are employed in order to gain a comprehensive picture that includes the accounts of African/Caribbean boys, parents, teachers and youth workers. The study explores both the boys’ positive and negative experiences of school life. At one level, the boys’ narratives suggest ‘a nothing but the same old story’ of racial exclusion and subordination within urban secondary schools. At another level, we hear of the importance of education in their lives. Of particular significance is the evidence of how black supplementary schools and youth organisations are providing an educational space that positively supports them in their transition into adulthood. The study makes recommendations for educationalists and policy makers based on the findings. This includes the need to understand the boys’ experiences of racial exclusion and the complexities around the intersection of race, gender and class for a younger generation at the start of the twenty-first century. In comparing mainstream and supplementary educational spaces, the boys identify the need to build an inclusive mainstream curriculum that represents the historical past and cultural present of their lives. Importantly, the study vividly highlights contrasting teacher-pupil interactions between these two educational spaces, suggesting what the former can learn from the latter.

Black Children And Underachievement In Schools

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the United Kingdom, the reason why so many Black children fail in the educational system is a cause of much debate. Previous research have pointed to a number of causes, such as their home environments, poor family background, deficiency in language, teacher expectation, and black workers position in the job market. The current work by Frances Benskin, on the other hand, seeks to investigate whether or not racism plays a part in the underachievement of Black children in schools. Specifically, the study seeks to address whether Black children have the same opportunity to good learning experiences and resources as their white counterparts, and does the school portray a good ambience in accommodating all children, or do they feel isolated by a system that does not cater for their needs. Through this book, Frances hopes that readers can get a better understanding of the effects of racism and how it can affect people's lives if it is not dealt with effectively, in Britain or elsewhere. The research shows that racism, stereotyping, cultural differences, assumed dialect or language differences played a part in undetermining the capability of black children.

The Annual Report Of Her Majesty S Chief Inspector Of Education Children S Services And Skills 2007 08

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

With the establishment, on 1 April 2007, of the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, Ofsted's responsibilities for inspecting children's services changed substantially, with Ofsted now regulating and inspecting childcare, children's social care and provision for learners of all ages. This report covers the first full year of reporting on the organisation's new remit. The first section presents an evaluation of the quality and standards in care, early education, schools, colleges, adult learning and skills, and children's services. It is based on evidence from more than 45,000 inspections and regulatory visits in 2007-08. The second section draws on Ofsted's thematic inspections and surveys in the different areas of its remit. This section evaluates the effectiveness with which providers seek to address three important matters: improving the life chances of the least advantaged members of society through excellence in provision; safeguarding children and young people from neglect, abuse and other forms of harm; and enabling learners to acquire the skills they need to succeed in their working lives. The Chief Inspector is encouraged by the recognition that much is going well for so many children, young people and adult learners, but frustrated that there is still too much that is patently inadequate and too many settings and institutions where the rate of improvement is unacceptably slow.

BOOK EXCERPT:

As a renowned humanist, psychologist, and educator, Dr. Gordon is an African American who has spent most of his life in racially integrated sections of society, but he has never completely lost the sense that he is representing those who have been relegated to "the back of the bus." Both scholarly and accessible, this book examines many of the most important issues of educational theory and practice and places them in the context of the social justice imperative. Each section of essays -- including two new essays prepared especially for this book -- is introduced with commentaries in which the author contextualizes and explains the continuing relevance of the issues for today's educator.

Young Children At School In The Inner City

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

First published in 1988, this work reports on a major British study of children’s progress and behaviour in 33 infant schools. The research looks at children from nursery through to junior school and asks why some children had higher attainments and made more progress than others. Using observations not only in schools but also interviews with children and parents, the children’s skills on entering school were found to have an important effect on progress. In each school, black and white children, and girls and boys were studied, in order gauge whether gender or ethnicity were related to progress.

A collection of the Proceedings of a Society for Research in Child Development Round Table, held in 1993 by the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD).The intent of the round tables was "to help chart the course for child development research, health care, and public policy for the next ten years". The contributors believe the papers presented and the round table discussions, along with their broader distribution in this volume, do indeed offer useful insights and powerful guidance to researchers, policy makers, and practitioners and interventionists with a vast range of professional training.

In Search Of A Better Life

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume examines the phenomenon of mass population migration from the Caribbean to North America and the United Kingdom and the social, cultural, and economic adaptation of the immigrants to their new environments. A central theme of this volume is that twentieth century Caribbean migration is more than the migration of labor in search of jobs; it is also a movement of households and thus affects not only the well-being of family members but also their social relationships. The contributors provide new analytical perspectives on the factors that motivate this movement, and the social, cultural, and economic impact of the movement on the household itself. The volume is divided into three parts. Part I examines the historical movement to the United States and the United Kingdom. The chapters in this section explore the relationship between the character of Caribbean development and the factors motivating the migration of households, the nineteenth century beginnings of twentieth century mass Caribbean migration, and the social and economic experiences of the post-World War II Caribbean immigrants in Britain. Part II looks at the problems of settlement and adaptation in the major urban centers where Caribbean immigrants have tended to concentrate, giving special attention to the status of Caribbean women in the United States and the role of social networks in helping immigrants to adapt to their new surroundings. The final section looks at the problem of illegal migration from the Caribbean to the United States, drawing on data from the annual reports of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Students, researchers, and policy-makers will find In Search of a Better Life an important contribution to the understanding of the total migration process.
