The Faith Of The Early Fathers Volume 1

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Volume 1 A source-book of theological and historical passages from the Christian writings of the Pre-Nicene and Nicene eras. Volume 1 ends circa 382. Volume 1: the Pre-Nicene and Nicene eras Volume 2: the Post-Nicene era through St. Jerome; Volume 3: St. Augustine to the end of the patristic period. The passages selected are keyed to the numerical order established in M. J. Rouët de Journel's Enchiridion Patristicum. In no sense, however, are these volumes a translation of that standard work. The author has made his own investigation of theological textbooks in common use and has selected the patristic passages most frequently cited, including much that is in Rouët and much that is not. All passages have been freshly and accurately translated from the best critical editions. Preceding each selection is a brief introduction treating the authorship, date and place of composition, and the purpose of the work from which the selection is taken. The author's scholarship and sprightly sense of humor are evident in these prefatory remarks. Of immense value to the reader is the Doctrinal Index provided for each volume. Here one can find the texts pertinent to particular doctrinal points, a method especially useful to homilists. In addition, each volume is enhanced by comprehensive Scriptural and General Indices.

To Whom Shall We Go The Biblical Case For The Catholic Church Reissue

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In To Whom Shall We Go? Thomas J. Nash seeks to present anew the real Jesus, the Word who became flesh (John 1:14) to save all of humanity and to employ his Mystical Bride, the Catholic Church, as his instrument of salvation and life-transforming love. Nash makes biblical and historical arguments for the perennial relevance of Jesus and his Church. As Nash summarizes well, if the Catholic Church were merely a human institution, she would’ve entered the dustbin of history centuries ago, both because of internal scandals and external persecutions. Instead, two thousand years after the Resurrection, the Church continues to advance her God-given Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20).

Eight Ways Of Loving God

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

There is growing awareness that different people have different "love languages". What about God? Does He have a love language? Jeanette Flood answers this question by looking at the life and teachings of Jesus. With a conversational style and a dose of good humor, she describes eight love languages with fresh spiritual analogies and lessons from her own life. This work reveals that being a Christian means being in a relationship of love with Love Himself. Drawing on Scripture, Church teachings, and insights of the saints, it inspires readers to follow Saint Paul's advice to the Ephesians to "learn what is pleasing to the Lord" (Eph 5:10).

The Blessed Virgin Mary In England Vol 1

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"O Blessed Confidence, O Safe Refuge, Mother of God and Our Mother!" St. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109), Doctor of the Church"What is not generally known and only infrequently studied is the role of Our Lady over the centuries as a catechist: teacher of the faith, in a very real sense, primary teacher because she is Mother of God and Mother of the Church and faithful If any one factor might be singled out for the very high level of faith and religious practice in medieval 'merry England' (merry, because Mary's dowry, because consecrated to Mary as her possession and property) it is this Marian catechesis. Only when England deliberately rejected Mary did it cease to be the happy place it once was. Unfortunately, English colonization of other peoples took place only after the repudiation of Mary by England. That is why this catechetical work is especially valuable for the faithful and those who are seeking faith in America and other English speaking cultures. It will bring to their attention precisely what is central to catechetics and so often missing, the presence of Mary, Mother and Teacher. It will make perfectly clear why we need not fewer Marian sanctuaries, but many, many more in all parts of the country where this quiet, but so real and profound influence of the Marian principle of the Church will be felt at every level. It is my prayer and hope that those who read and study this work will find the same inspiration and stimulus that I found in having the privilege to read the manuscript before publication. We are much indebted to Brother Anthony Josemaria Pasquale, a Franciscan Tertiary of the Immaculate and gifted scholar, for the effort he has expended to find qualified contributors and to offer so well edited a book to the general public." -From the Foreword by Father Peter M. Fehlner, FI, theologian, sponsor of the International Symposium on Marian Coredemption
