The Faith Once For All Delivered Doctrinal Authority In Catholic Theology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the third verse of his eponymous New Testament epistle, Jude exhorts his readers “to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered,” a charge that continues to resound to the present day. This collection of essays responds to the apostle’s call by providing both a diagnosis of the ills of modern progressivist Catholic doctrinal and moral theology and a prescription for the safeguarding of orthodoxy via a rightly understood return to the traditional sources of theology. The essays in the first part of this collection seek to answer the question, “What went wrong with Catholic theology since the Second Vatican Council?” Following a brief account of the movement in modern theology from its philosophical basis in Kant and Hegel to the nouvelle théologie and later progressivist theologies of the twentieth century, the writings of Karl Rahner, Walter Kasper, and Bernhard Häring are treated as representative of principal problematic trends, and the concept of heresy is surveyed as it has been understood in the past and as it operates in the Church today. The essays in the second part indicate the way forward for Catholic doctrinal and moral theology, examining and distinguishing the orthodox use of the fontes theologiae of magisterial teachings, the deposit of faith in its development, the “sense of the faithful” (sensus fidelium), Sacred Scripture, and Church councils and synods. In its twofold attentiveness to contemporary errors in Catholic theology and to tradition-based correctives, The Faith Once for All Delivered offers an urgent and compelling summons to the sacred mission of defending doctrinal and moral orthodoxy.

Antistite Nostro The Episcopal Ministry In The Life Of The Local Church

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The richness of the Catholic Church is found in the bonds of communion between the universal church and the local church. The bishop―the antistite, or high priest, as he is entitled in the Canon of the Mass―is the apostolic successor who, though always in communion with the pope, is likewise a vicar of Christ in his own right. Thus, the role of the bishop―and his understanding of his own ministry―can shape the personality of a diocese as well as its understanding of its place in the worldwide church. This Festschrift, written in honor of a bishop who has sought to enliven his diocese and remind it of its bonds of communion with the whole, aims to provide a multi-disciplined approach to the ministry of the diocesan bishop at a time when authority is held in suspicion, communion is seen as constricting, and obedience to those in authority is treated as an artifact of a bygone age. The assembled essays approach the question of the episcopal ministry from the perspective of the Catholic Church's theological tradition and aim to enlighten clergy and laity about the ministry of their bishops and encourage bishops themselves in exercising their sacred office.

Neo Calvinism And Roman Catholicism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In their theological and historical interactions, neo-Calvinism and Roman Catholicism have often met in moments of conflict and co-operation. The neo-Calvinist statesman Abraham Kuyper polemicized against the Roman Catholic Church and its theology, whilst building bridges between those traditions by forging novel political coalitions across ecclesiastical boundaries. In theology, Gerrit C. Berkouwer, a neo-Calvinist critic of Roman Catholicism in the 1930s, later attended the Second Vatican Council as an appreciative Protestant observer. Telling their stories and others—including new research on lesser-known figures and neglected topics—this book presents the first scholarly volume on those dynamics of polemics and partnership.

T T Clark Handbook Of Edward Schillebeeckx

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Written by leading experts on both the thought of Edward Schillebeeckx and modern theology, this handbook offers the first comprehensive study of the historical, philosophical, political and theological aspects of Schillebeeckx's work. As one of the most influential Catholic theologians of the twentieth century, he played a key role in the preparations for the theological revolution of the Second Vatican Council and the debates of the post-conciliar era. His engagement with critical theory, hermeneutics, and biblical scholarship culminated in his groundbreaking Christological trilogy, which marked Schillebeeckx as one of the most significant and innovative thinkers of his time. By building an overview of recent research into Schillebeeckx's writing, the contributors shed new light on his influence and ongoing relevance in contemporary theology. Beginning with the roots of Schillebeeckx's views on metaphysics, spirituality and faith, the essays then move to his work during and after the Second Vatican Council, and then to his engagement with new directions in philosophy and his renewal of classical topics such as creation, theological and soteriological anthropology, and eschatology. Culminating with an analysis of theology and culture, this handbook thoroughly explores the implications of Schillebeeckx's theology for a contemporary readership.
