BOOK EXCERPT:
One of the leading Historical Jesus scholars of our time, John Meier has also made significant contributions in the areas of early Judaism and New Testament studies writ large. The Figure of Jesus in History and Theology features more than a dozen prominent scholars who engage Meier's work and address its reception today. These scholars, whose areas of expertise range from second temple Judaism to early Christianity, revisit, extend, and respond to Meier's scholarship in ways that allow readers to appreciate anew Meier's landmark publications. Collectively, these essays cast new light on the question of the Historical Jesus and provide a wealth of insight into John Meier's body of work as viewed through the lens of contemporary research. The volume offers essays that explore early Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts for New Testament writings, with contributions from Gary Anderson, James VanderKam, Michael Duggan, and Michael Theobald. Five related essays involve historical Jesus research, by Francis Moloney, William Loader, Amy-Jill Levine, Barbara Reid, and Michael Benjamin Cover. Five more essays concern the New Testament Gospels, as explored by Donald Senior, David Lincicum, Brant Pitre, Jeremy Corley, and Harold Attridge. The final three contributions by Frank Matera, David Aune and Alan Mitchell examine the Epistle to the Hebrews. This book is essential reading as it chronicles how the capacious scholarship of John Meier has impacted the 21st century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Jesus was a Jew and not a Christian. That affirmation may seem obvious, but here an international cast of Jewish and Christian scholars spell out its weighty and often complex consequences for contemporary Jewish-Christian dialogue. Soundings in the Religion of Jesus contextualizes Jesus and the writings about him that set the stage for Jewish-Christian relations for the next two thousand years. Of equal importance, this book considers the reception, celebration, and (too often) the neglect of Jesus' Jewishness in modern contexts and the impact such responses have had for Jewish-Christian relations. Topics explored include the ethics of scriptural translation, the ideological motives of Nazi theologians and other "quests" for the Historical Jesus, and the ways in which New Testament portraits of Jesus both help and hurt authentic Jewish-Christian dialogue.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume traces the history of antisemitism from antiquity through contemporary manifestations of the discrimination of Jews. It documents the religious, sociological, political and economic contexts in which antisemitism thrived and thrives and shows how such circumstances served as support and reinforcement for a curtailment of the Jews’ social status. The volume sheds light on historical processes of discrimination and identifies them as a key factor in the contemporary and future fight against antisemitism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Mysteries of the Early Christ takes readers on a journey into the rarely explored realms of the Infancy Gospels, unveiling the apocryphal narratives that seek to illuminate the early years of Jesus Christ. From miraculous births to childhood wonders, these non-canonical texts reveal a compelling dimension of Christian tradition that has long remained at the peripheries of historical study. Andrew S. Lee delves into the origins, theological depth, and cultural impact of these mysterious texts, examining how they enriched early Christian communities' understanding of Christ and contributed to broader theological developments. By exploring the narratives of the Protoevangelium of James, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, and other apocryphal writings, Lee provides valuable insights into the ancient world's religious and cultural landscape. This book uncovers the significance of the Childhood Gospels in shaping early Christian beliefs, offering readers a fresh perspective on the faith's formative years. Through careful historical analysis and engaging storytelling, Mysteries of the Early Christ invites readers to reimagine the mysterious early life of Jesus and the role these narratives played in the evolution of Christian thought.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Is there evidence for the existence of God, defined as the transcendent entity responsible for all material existence? The author believes that there is, albeit such evidence is not necessarily proof for everyone. In this two-part study, Wayne Talbot firstly presents the evidence that has convinced him that God is the most plausible explanation. With a limited but sufficient understanding of the nature of existence, in terms of energy, matter, space, and time, he demonstrates his primary axiom: that nothing can explain itself. The natural corollary of this is that scientists will never be able to explain the origins of material existence by examining the material itself. An explanation of origins must always lie outside the entity being examined. This is why scientists cannot explain the origin of the proposed singularity and why some scientists seek an alternative to the Big Bang model of our universe, even resorting to logical absurdities such as the universe creating itself out of nothing while in the presence of something. With the reality of God being his presupposition for what follows, the author examines the case for monotheistic religions versus polytheistic, concluding that the latter are antithetical to a God who is one. Left with a choice between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, he concludes that if God has communicated his guidance for living to any, it is most likely Judaism as recorded in the Hebrew scriptures. The question becomes, Which parts of those scriptures were intended for the children of Israel alone, and which were for all people for all time? Researching ever deeper, he reveals what he has come to believe about how God wants us to relate to him and the specific guidance that should be reworded for contemporary times. The spirit of Torah is so much more than the mere words.
