BOOK EXCERPT:
This book examines the methodological development of the principles of Islamic political economy in its theoretical and applied aspects. This is carried out in a general equilibrium framework using the theory of social choice. Thus a comparative study is also undertaken here in these areas while developing the theory of Islamic political economy. In these respects this book appears to be the first one of its kind.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The aim of this book is to explore and analyze the Islamic axioms, foundation principles and values underpinning the field of governance in an attempt to construct the architectonics of a new systemic and dynamic theory and formulate the articulation of ‘Islamic governance’. This discursive and abstract, rather than being an empirical exercise, assumes to produce a ‘good governance’ framework within its own formulation through a value-shaped dynamic model according to maqasid al-Shari’ah (higher objective of Shari’ah) by going beyond the narrow remit of classical and contemporary discussions produced on the topic, which propose a certain institutional model of governance based on the classical juristic (fiqh) method. Through an exclusive analytical discursive approach in this book, readers will find that Islam as one of the major religions in the contemporary world with the claim of promising the underpinning principles and philosophical foundations of worldly affairs and institutions through a micro method of producing homoIslamicus could contribute towards development of societies by establishing a unique model of governance from its explicit ontological worldview through a directed descriptive epistemology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The first part of this book is designed to display the sources and principles of economics and trade transactions in the Islamic community. It analyzes the judicial injunctions against riba and proves that riba including interest is prohibited. Basing the argument on theoretical (Quran and Sunna) as well as the customary practice during the life of the messenger of God in Mekka and Al-Madina. Notably, the Islamic teachings covers both the worldly and religious affairs. This is a very revealing indication that Islam does not only regulate the relations of the human beings with God, but also extends to regulating (i) the relationship of the ruler with the ruled through al-shura, and (ii) economic and financial transactions in the market. Notable among these transactions: a) the abolition of riba and instigating interest-free economy, (b) providing the basic needs of society, (c) achieving social justice by applying zakat levy and other ordinances, and last but not least inheritance law and redistribution of State land for public benefits. The second and third part of the book explains and proves that prohibition of riba does not circumvent trade or paralyze the economy. On the contrary by eliminating injustice inherent in riba, the banking system will be liberated from discrepancies and the economy will perform more efficiently by mitigating the evils of riba.

BOOK EXCERPT:
How the booming Islamic finance industry became an ultramodern hybrid of religion and markets In just fifty years, Islamic finance has grown from a tiny experiment operated from a Volkswagen van to a thriving global industry worth more than the entire financial sector of India, South America, or Eastern Europe. You can now shop with an Islamic credit card, invest in Islamic bonds, and buy Islamic derivatives. But how has this spectacular growth been possible, given Islam’s strictures against interest? In The Paradox of Islamic Finance, Ryan Calder examines the Islamic finance boom, arguing that shariah scholars—experts in Islamic law who certify financial products as truly Islamic—have made the industry a profitable, if controversial, hybrid of religion and markets. Critics say Islamic finance merely reproduces conventional interest-based finance, with the shariah scholars’ blessing. From an economic perspective, they are right: the most popular Islamic products act like conventional interest-bearing ones, earning healthy profits for Islamic banks and global financial heavyweights like Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs. Yet as Calder shows by delving into the shariah scholars’ day-to-day work, what seem like high-tech work-arounds to outsiders carry deep and nuanced meaning to the scholars—and to the hundreds of millions of Muslims who respect their expertise. He argues that Shariah scholars’ conception of Islamic finance is perfectly suited to the age of financialization and the global efflorescence of shariah-minded Islam.
