Family ties draw Boston’s art sleuths into an island murder mystery in this “unalloyed pleasure” from the international bestselling author (Publishers Weekly). Though a few years past sixty, Sarah Kelling’s Aunt Emma is as vigorous as a girl of twenty-two. She sings, she dances, and when the local fire department needs a fundraising boost, she’s happy to jump out a window for charity. This summer, she decamps to Maine, to beat the heat at an island retreat for artists and great thinkers. There are writers, painters, a psychic, and a historian, and their company promises to be great fun—until a few of them go treasure-crazy. Sensible people have long dismissed rumors of the Pocapuk Island treasure as myth, but artists are seldom sensible. When their rampant digging stirs up buried trouble, it leads to theft, drugging, and a murder. And although Sarah and her husband Max give investigative advice by phone, it’s up to Aunt Emma to save the islanders from themselves.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Gladstone Bag is a touching and engrossing tale of colonial China in the 1930s. Peter Herriton travels from his family’s guilty past and the stifling atmosphere of middle England in to Foochow, China. The languid pace of life in Colonial China amuses Peter, but as the bombs fall and Japan mobilises Peter realises the depth of the British myopia in the face of the impending Japanese Invasion. The novel has been informed by author Urusla Ryland’s own experiences of China in the 1930s, Ursula was born in Fuzhou (Foochow) where her father was the Superintendent of Tak Ding Hospital and medical officer to the British Consulate. Looked after by her Chinese amah, Ursula spoke Fuzhou dialect, Pidgin English and English from an early age. In 1938 she moved with her parents to Sarawak, Borneo to avoid the immanent Japanese invasion.

'Rewarding, inventive and enjoyably perplexing' Sunday Times A colleague writes an obituary for a fellow scientist and Nobel Prize winner, somewhat relishing his death; a train in the Scottish Highlands takes the wrong track during a snowstorm, resulting in a death, possibly murder; a publisher's reader reports on a hospital romance novel that bizarrely ends with a gory, Ripper-style murder. Ten apparently separate stories are ingeniously drawn together to form variations on a single theme - obsession with the success of a rival and the plotting of his death. But obsession is an unstable motive for murder, and the game of revenge can turn very sour . . . Betrayals is an ingenious, mesmerising puzzle, intricately pieced together by a master of the art.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Since their original appearance more than two decades ago, Michael Kurland's two novels featuring Professor James Moriarty--The Infernal Device and Death by Gaslight--have been among the most acclaimed of the works based on the characters first introduced by Authur Conan Doyle. In Doyle's original stories, Professor Moriarty is the bete noire of Sherlock Holmes, who deems the professor his mental equivalent and ethical opposite, declares him "the Napoleon of Crime, " and wrestles him seemingly to their mutual deaths at Reichenbach Falls. But indeed there are two sides to every story, and while Moriarty may not always tread strictly on the side of the law, he is also, in these novels, not quite about the person that Holmes and Watson made him out to be. In Kurland's fictions about Moriarty, the truth is finally revealed: The Infernal Device--A dangerous adversary seeking to topple the British monarchy places Moriarty in mortal jeopardy, forcing him to collaborate with his nemesis Sherlock Holmes. Death by Gaslight--A serial killer is stalking the cream of England's aristocracy, baffling both the police and Sherlock Holmes and leaving the powers in charge to play one last desperate card: Professor Moriarty. The Paradol Paradox--The first new Moriarty story in almost twenty years, it has never before appeared in print. Brilliantly and vividly evoking late Victorian England in all its facets, this first-ever omnibus of the adventures of Proefssor James Moriarty will delight longtime fans as well as readers new to the milieu.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Over the years I have tried to get the answers to the many, many questions that I have been asked regarding the RMS Titanic's Chief Purser Hugh Richard Walter McElroy, in doing this Autobiography and family research, the world can now know and hopefully understand Hugh, also I hope all those questions that have been asked over the years have now possibly been answered also if others wish to go further into speculation, like they have in the past, will find that there is no substitute for the truth, I hope that they will do their research rationally in locating the raw truth and with some regard to the simple fact that there are no villains in this story: just human beings with human characteristics. This book contains a large amount of unknown facts about the family and Hugh, regards his early life, His never before told regards his unknown life with the White Star Line; what happened to Barbara after Hugh died; Why did Hugh's sister Charlotte's name disappear so quickly from the Southampton Committee of the Titanic Relief Fund, in November 1914) after all she was a class "A" dependants. The loss of the R.M.S. Titanic created a debate that has raged ever since, and probably will do so for ever, It happened in 1912, prior to two world wars, long before television, indeed, long before the talking pictures. It was an era as different to today as one can imagine, It was a world quite unlike our present days in nearly every respect, yet this event has even the most modern child's attention when it is spoken of. It is a story and the effects of its happening endure, and will always endure, so long as humans remain human.
