BOOK EXCERPT:
The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments was a children’s chemistry book written in the 1960s by Robert Brent and illustrated by Harry Lazarus and published by Western Publishing in their Golden Books series. Many of the experiments contained in the book are now considered highly dangerous for unsupervised children, and would not appear in a modern children’s chemistry book. Only 126 copies of this book exist in libraries worldwide. The book was a source of inspiration to David Hahn, nicknamed “the Radioactive Boy Scout” by the media, who tried to collect a sample of every chemical element and also built a model nuclear reactor, which led to the involvement of the authorities. This book is now considered quite RARE and a Scientific Gem, and so we are happy to have made this available for Print!! BOOK EXCERPT:
From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes incredible stories of science, history, finance, mythology, the arts, medicine, and more, as told by the Periodic Table. Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) the go-to element for laboratory pranksters? The Periodic Table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it's also a treasure trove of adventure, betrayal, and obsession. These fascinating tales follow every element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, and in the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. The Disappearing Spoon masterfully fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, and discovery -- from the Big Bang through the end of time. Though solid at room temperature, gallium is a moldable metal that melts at 84 degrees Fahrenheit. A classic science prank is to mold gallium spoons, serve them with tea, and watch guests recoil as their utensils disappear.

The mysteries of knowing what are a well, a milk chrun, a sausage making machine or a rub board are solved through the artist's work and clear descriptions. The second part exposes the reader to the classic model plan of the farm enterprise to produce new enterprises ranging from a lemonade stand to architecture, electronics or fashions using the Golden Seven Values- beginning with hard work and ending with rewards. To enhance this exciting journey, a poetic song entitled, We Are Producers/Consumers, is included for group or solo singing. The final section shows a picture album of young achievers for additional inspiration for excited learners to excel or go to the next level of production. In addition, a poem for memorization in included entitled, Your Winning Future.

The next adventure, Your Winning Future, (Volume 2) shows a picture album of young achievers for inspiration for the learners to go to a higher level of production. In addition, a poem for memorization is included entitled, Your Winning Future. The fourth level of growth challenge is The Self-Expression Adventure. Memorization of the poem, Breakthrough your Breakdowns is recommended for managing life challenges. Also, each student should write a poem which best expresses his/her educational goals/career ambition. The final progress indicator is The Platinum Growth Adventure. Each student is encouraged to select and read one book or more per month from the appendix reading list; learn the nutritional values of, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables; visit a farm and write an essay for class reading.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Growing up in suburban Detroit, David Hahn was fascinated by science, and his basement experiments—building homemade fireworks, brewing moonshine, and concocting his own self-tanning lotion—were more ambitious than those of other boys. While working on his Atomic Energy badge for the Boy Scouts, David’s obsessive attention turned to nuclear energy. Throwing caution to the wind, he plunged into a new project: building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard garden shed. In The Radioactive Boy Scout, veteran journalist Ken Silverstein recreates in brilliant detail the months of David’s improbable nuclear quest. Posing as a physics professor, David solicited information on reactor design from the U.S. government and from industry experts. (Ironically, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was his number one source of information.) Scavenging antiques stores and junkyards for old-fashioned smoke detectors and gas lanterns—both of which contain small amounts of radioactive material—and following blueprints he found in an outdated physics textbook, David cobbled together a crude device that threw off toxic levels of radiation. His unsanctioned and wholly unsupervised project finally sparked an environmental catastrophe that put his town’s forty thousand residents at risk and caused the EPA to shut down his lab and bury it at a radioactive dumpsite in Utah. An outrageous account of ambition and, ultimately, hubris that sits comfortably on the shelf next to such offbeat science books as Driving Mr. Albert and stories of grand capers like Catch Me If You Can, The Radioactive Boy Scout is a real-life adventure with the narrative energy of a first-rate thriller.
