The book is mainly about hunting in one small area of Sully County South Dakota. And focuses quite a lot on the old days his folks and the mallard ducks the rare Canada goose then rare as it was very difficult to get one then especially for rank amateurs like he was then it starts with his son Brads essay wrote for some class he was taking somewhere and another wrote by his grandson Johnny for a junior high class at Sully Buttes school in Onida then introduces you to Brads son Josh who has picked up the hunting fever too then to Laurences parents the founders of the place so many loved to hunt on. And he introduces to his mentor in hunting Elliott and to the one dog that finally taught him how to behave with hunting dogs and how to honk like a goose with your voice if you want to sputter and spit like he did then and now he cannot cut the mustard on that anymore a few descriptions of some hunts and pictures and drawings where no pictures exist.

My name is Les Slaten. I'm 49 years old and am medically retired. I love raising Labrador Retrievers for hunting ducks and geese and being a good family pet. I live in Alton Illinois and have hunted Jersey and Calhoun counties all my life. There are state controlled hunting areas in this part of the country that are very good hunting places. I have just finished the 2002 duck season, which I hunted almost every day without a dog. My other dog Jazz had seven puppies on November 5th, 2002 so I couldn't take her with me as she was nursing her puppies. One yellow female died in the cold and I buried her with Sadie. We called her Jazzs Little Angel. Everyday I went hunting I could see their graves and when I drove by Id always say Hi Sadie! Hi Angel! I brought home 40 ducks and one goose and didnt use a dog to hunt with the whole season except for 2 days. I would joke and say I sent 40 ducks and one goose to play with Sadie. I ate all of them for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and other times, and I took some ducks to the local bar I frequent, Wayne Allens, to feed my friends duck and dressing on Super Bowl Sunday and other days also. So now as I leave you I hope you sincerely enjoyed my book. I wrote this with so much love and affection for my dog and my loss, it has helped me so much. Who knows!! Maybe Ill write another book!! During the past 15 years considerable attention has been focused on research and management problems associated with the Mississippi Valley population of Canada Geese. The general breeding, migration, and wintering ranges are well defined. Because this flock is closely associated with national wildlife refuges and State management areas in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and the majority of this population winters in southern Illinois and vicinity, it has been possible to determine quite accurately annual total population trends, annual harvest rates, and the breeding potential of the population sent back to the breeding grounds each spring. Based on knowledge accumulated for this population, steps are being taken to compile similar information for other major continental Canada goose populations.
