Reading And Learning

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The amounts of information that are ?ooding people both at the workplace and in private life have increased dramatically in the past ten years. The number of paper documents doubles every four years, and the amount of information stored on all data carriers every six years. New knowledge, however, increases at a considerably lower rate. Possibilities for automatic content recognition in various media and for the processing of documents are therefore becoming more important every day. Especially in economic terms, the e?cient handling of information, i.e., ?- ing the right information at the right time, is an invaluable resource for any enterprise, but it is particularly important for small- and medium-sized ent- prises. The market for document management systems, which in Europe had a volume of approximately 5 billion euros in 2000, will increase considerably over the next few years. The BMBF recognized this development at an early stage. As early as in 1995, it pooled national capabilities in this ?eld in order to support research on the automatic processing of information within the framework of a large collaborative project (READ) involving both industrial companies and research centres. Evaluation of the results led to the conclusion that research work had been successful, and, in a second phase, funding was provided for the colla- rative follow-up project Adaptive READ from 1999 to 2003. The completion of thesetwoimportantlong-termresearchprojectshascontributedsubstantiallyto improving the possibilities of content recognition and processing of handwritten, printed and electronic documents.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Tapestry: A Medieval Tale of Curses, Crowns, and Courage introduces a wonderful world of dragons, knights, and powerful wizards. They wind their way through a maze of lies, jealousy, and madness in search of truth, justice, and honor. As imagined by author Jerry Smith, this world comes alive through a poetic narrative that follows the story of a gentle princess and her reluctant hero. Fortified with courage and stealth, they find the strength and perseverance to overcome the death, darkness, and destruction unleashed upon their land by an evil, power-hungry mage and a scheming sorceress. Written in the style of the great Greek and Roman poets, Tapestry presents rich imagery and eloquent rhyming couplets portraying the adversity encountered by its characters. It follows them as they struggleevil against good, death against life, and destruction against rebirth. Feudal lords, evil enemies, and noble knights emerge and entwine into colorful strands, creating this carefully woven tale as a vibrant tapestry filled with hope and promise for an age consumed by darkness and despair. Tapestry: A Medieval Tale of Curses, Crowns, and Courage brings the poetic narrative to a story of good versus evil in a world brimming with justice, honor, mystery, and magic.

Canadian Football The Grey Cup Years

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Canadian Football: The Grey Cup Years traces the first sixty years of the Grey Cup and its influence as a catalyst for the growth of football in Canada. Football moved from an occasion for competition among local teams, to inter-city and inter-provincial rivalries and eventually to the national scene. It began as a purely amateur sport and morphed into the Canadian Football League. Key elements in its growth are discussed: the rise of professionalism, rules of the game and the style of play as well as many of the defining moments and personnel of the era. The book stands alone as well as a lead-in to three other books on Canadian football by Cosentino: Closed Doors and Edmonton Crude, Gone South, and Home Again.
