The Ground Between

BOOK EXCERPT:

The guiding inspiration of this book is the attraction and distance that mark the relation between anthropology and philosophy. This theme is explored through encounters between individual anthropologists and particular regions of philosophy. Several of the most basic concepts of the discipline—including notions of ethics, politics, temporality, self and other, and the nature of human life—are products of a dialogue, both implicit and explicit, between anthropology and philosophy. These philosophical undercurrents in anthropology also speak to the question of what it is to experience our being in a world marked by radical difference and otherness. In The Ground Between, twelve leading anthropologists offer intimate reflections on the influence of particular philosophers on their way of seeing the world, and on what ethnography has taught them about philosophy. Ethnographies of the mundane and the everyday raise fundamental issues that the contributors grapple with in both their lives and their thinking. With directness and honesty, they relate particular philosophers to matters such as how to respond to the suffering of the other, how concepts arise in the give and take of everyday life, and how to be attuned to the world through the senses. Their essays challenge the idea that philosophy is solely the province of professional philosophers, and suggest that certain modalities of being in the world might be construed as ways of doing philosophy. Recovering The Ground

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book sets forth an ontological Copernican revolution. By means of a critical phenomenology, it shifts the axis of reflection from the putatively bedrock dualisms in which philosophy was conceived, to our lively, intentional mindbodies that are ontologically antecedent to, beyond the grasp of, yet implicated in, all reflection. In these exercises, reflection’s center of gravity is shifted to our mindbodies, whose meditated whatness can be known in all of its forms of appearance—as material objects, organisms, makers, keepers and breakers of promises, husbands and wives, et cetera—and whose unmediated thisness everywhere importunately “shows itself.” From this seamless, ontological bedrock, all of our dualisms have been brought forth by reflection. They never cease to be founded there; in action they disappear there. How, on this new foundation, do ‘reflection’, ‘interpretation’, ‘thinking’, ‘speaking’, ‘time’, ‘hope’, and ‘memory’ come differently to do their work?

Above Ground Storage Tank Oil Spills

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Supply of oil and gas continues to increase as well as natural events such as hurricanes, while engineers and safety managers are not well trained on storage tank engineering and leak detection, one of the most vulnerable and least studied components of oil and gas storage equipment. Above Ground Storage Tank Oil and Chemical Spills gives engineers and researchers a training guide on tank design, tank failure modes and risk analysis. Bridging between research and application, this reference sends an integrated engineering approach backed by both corporate and academic contributors focused specifically on storage tanks, their spills, case histories, and technical aspects of leakage from storage tanks. Additional topics include regulations, differences between spills from storage tanks and other sources, and supported by extensive data and additional references. Above Ground Storage Tank Oil and Chemical Spills delivers a much-needed knowledge source for today's engineers and managers to keep supply and personnel safe. - Learn from both academic and corporate contributors, bridging between research and practical application - Understand lessons learned with case studies and extensive data - Know the differences between spills from storage tanks and other sources

Heating And Cooling With Ground Source Heat Pumps In Cold And Moderate Climates

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Heating and Cooling with Ground-Source Heat Pumps in Cold and Moderate Climates: Design Principles, Potential Applications and Case Studies focuses on applications and cases studies of ground-source heat pumps in moderate and cold climates. It details technical aspects (such as materials, thermal fluid carriers and pumping, and drilling/trenching technologies), as well as the most common and uncommon application fields for basic system configurations. The principles of system integrations and applications in moderate and cold climates (such as hybrid, solar-assisted, thermo-syphon, foundation, mines, snow melting, district heating and cooling ground-source heat pump systems, etc.) are also presented, each followed by case studies. Based on the author's more than 30 years of technical experience Discusses ground-source heat pump technologies that can be successfully applied in moderate and cold climates Presents several case studies, including successful energy results, as well as the main lessons learned This work is aimed at designers of HVAC systems, as well as geological, mechanical, and chemical engineers implementing environmentally-friendly heating and cooling technologies for buildings.
