BOOK EXCERPT:
George MacDonald is a witness to the power of imagination. By using the art of enchantment, he is able to draw readers into another world seemingly more real than this one. What was the power behind his imagination and what drove MacDonald's art? It was his vision of the spiritual life that provided the context for his fantastic fairy tales and other writings. The Harmony Within: The Spiritual Vision of George MacDonald takes a close look at the religious roots of MacDonald's writing. So many people today are looking for a spiritual connection between God and man, between myth and destiny. George MacDonald's work provides a doorway to other worlds; the ideas behind his writing may help reshape the mythic elements of our lives.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The World Bank has a long history of investing in China's technical and vocational education and training (TVET), dating back to the 1963 Higher Education Project, which benefited selected tertiary TVET programs in project schools. The initial World Bank projects for TVET in China were designed mostly on the national level, supporting selected institutions in multiple provinces. Starting in 2006, based on strong analytical work and increased demand from various provinces, the World Bank began a direct policy dialogue with interested provinces, and in turn started supporting provincial level projects in TVET. These include the Guangdong Technical and Vocational Education Project and the Liaoning and Shandong Technical and Vocational Education Project, both of which are currently under implementation. Located on the southwestern border of China, Yunnan is a medium-sized Chinese province with abundant natural resources and high levels of ethnic diversity. Although Yunnan is still one of the poorest provinces in China, it has experienced rapid economic growth rates over the last decade and is expected to maintain an annual growth rate of 10 percent or higher. The recent national Bridgehead Strategy has further positioned Yunnan as a strategic gateway in the Southwest region, providing tremendous new opportunities for its development. The study is aimed at facilitating policy development leading to a demand-driven, high-quality, and equitable education and training system conducive to lifelong learning. The experience of Yunnan also sheds light on skills development in China, as the analysis in this report situates Yunnan in the broader national context. The intended audience includes policymakers in the Ministries of Education, Human Resources and Social Security, Agriculture, and Finance, and the Poverty Alleviation Office and National Development and Reform Commission. The report would also be of interest to researchers and development workers interested in understanding skills development in China.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Justice and harmony have long been two of the world’s most treasured ideals, but much of modern moral and political philosophy puts them on opposite sides of the divide between liberal theories of the right and communitarian theories of the good. Joshua Mason argues that the encounter with their Chinese counterparts, zhengyi and hexie, can overcome this opposition, revealing a pattern that reframes justice and harmony as mutually interdependent concepts in a three-part framework of root harmony (benhe), harmonic justice (heyi), and just harmony (zhenghe). Broadly surveying the histories of western and Chinese moral and political philosophies, Justice and Harmony: Cross-Cultural Ideals in Conflict and Cooperation explores our cross-cultural conceptual inventories and develops a comparative framework that can overcome entrenched binary oppositions and reconcile these grand global values.

Assisted by Scott Olsen (Central Florida Community College, USA) This volume is a result of the author's four decades of research in the field of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Section and their applications. It provides a broad introduction to the fascinating and beautiful subject of the ?Mathematics of Harmony,? a new interdisciplinary direction of modern science. This direction has its origins in ?The Elements? of Euclid and has many unexpected applications in contemporary mathematics (a new approach to a history of mathematics, the generalized Fibonacci numbers and the generalized golden proportions, the ?golden? algebraic equations, the generalized Binet formulas, Fibonacci and ?golden? matrices), theoretical physics (new hyperbolic models of Nature) and computer science (algorithmic measurement theory, number systems with irrational radices, Fibonacci computers, ternary mirror-symmetrical arithmetic, a new theory of coding and cryptography based on the Fibonacci and ?golden? matrices). The book is intended for a wide audience including mathematics teachers of high schools, students of colleges and universities and scientists in the field of mathematics, theoretical physics and computer science. The book may be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in mathematics and computer science.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This work elucidates the nature of the notion of Locality in phonology, describing the minimal conditions under which sounds assimilate to one another. The central thesis is that a sound can assimilate to another sound only if gestural contiguity is established between these two sounds. The argument supporting the central thesis of this book is unique in bringing evidence from articulatory dynamics, electromyography, and cross-linguistic sound patterns to converge on the same notion of locality in phonology. This book will be of particular interest to researchers in phonetics, phonology, and morphology, as well as to cognitive scientists interested in how the grammar may include constraints that emerge from the physical aspects of speech.
