eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is the third update of the Health for All policy framework for the WHO European Region adopted in September 2005. This concluded two years of work integrating the new knowledge accumulated since the previous update in 1998 and incorporating the results from broad consultations with countries and key partner agencies. This 2005 update develops the concept of ethical values-based governance. It also offers policy-makers the potential to put values into practice and action. A set of concrete tools is proposed that can be used to check national health policies or national health systems for their respect for certain rights and values. The update calls for an open-ended Health for All process a forum for exchanging experiences examples and case studies of national Health for All activities that countries themselves choose to carry out. In this regard the 2005 update may be used as a tool for promoting the ethical development of national health policies in a way that is pragmatic and useful ensuring the continuous evolution of Health for All in the European Region.

Gaining Health

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Noncommunicable diseases pose the greatest threat to the health of the people in the WHO European Region, yet this is an area where the greatest health gains are available at relatively modest cost. This book gives detailed insight into policy development in eight European countries over several decades to address the challenge of noncommunicable diseases, and draws out the main themes to assist policy-makers in formulating their own responses. While originally developed to support countries in implementing the WHO European Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, the insights are likely to be of benefit to a much wider audience.

In the twentieth century, the urban settings of the wealthy nations were largely associated with opportunity, accumulation of wealth, and better health than their rural counterparts. In the twenty-first century, demographic changes, globalization, and climate change are having important health consequences on wealthy nations and especially on low- and middle-income countries. The increasing concentration of poverty and significant inequalities between urban neighborhoods and the physical and social environments in cities are important determinants of population health. In this important new book, experts identify the priority problems and outline solutions that can generate and sustain healthy urban environments. Foreword by Michael H. Understanding Health Policy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In recent years the pace of reform in health policy and the NHS has been relentless. But how are policies formed and implemented? This fully updated edition of a bestselling book explores the processes and institutions that make health policy, examining what constitutes health policy, where power lies, and what changes could be made to improve the quality of health policy making. Drawing on original research by the author over many years, and a wide range of secondary sources, the book examines the role of various institutions in the formation and implementation of health policy. Unlike most standard texts, it considers the impact of devolution in the UK and the role of European and international institutions and fills a need for an up-to-date overview of this fast-moving area. It features new case studies to illustrate how policy has evolved and developed in recent years. This new edition has been fully updated to reflect policies under the later years of New Labour and the Coalition government. Although written particularly with the needs of students and tutors in mind, this accessible textbook will also appeal to policy makers and practitioners in the health policy field.
