BOOK EXCERPT:
Does the concept of holiness hold any relevance for Christians in the twenty-first century? Or is it rather a relic of the past, with little to offer in today's postmodern world? The contributors to this book firmly insist that holiness is indeed relevant, no matter the age in which we live. Moreover, it is essential to following Christ in the twenty-first century. The essayists are all members of the Wesleyan Holiness Study Project, a gathering of scholars and leaders who have met since 2004 to explore the mission of the churches of the Holiness movement. The book begins with two compelling ecumenical statements articulating the holiness message for today's church: "The Holiness Manifesto" and "Fresh Eyes on Holiness." These are followed by a dozen penetrating essays grouped in three parts: (1) the understanding of holiness in Scripture, (2) holiness in historical and theological perspective, and (3) holiness in relation to various practical aspects of ministry. The book concludes with appendixes offering five considered descriptions of holiness. The fastest-growing segments of the church worldwide have their roots in the Wesleyan Holiness tradition. Catholic, Orthodox, and other Protestant denominations are discovering its relevance to their own traditions and practices. The Holiness Manifesto offers an ideal overview to those wishing to understand more about this extremely influential movement. Contributors: Jim Adams Barry Callen Lisa L. BOOK EXCERPT:
It is much harder to define a religious movement than it is to define a religion or denomination. That applies especially when that movement almost defies definition as the Holiness Movement does. The Holiness Movement is a Methodist religious renewal movement that has over 12 million adherents worldwide. Perhaps the most familiar public manifestation of the holiness movement has been its urban holiness missions, and the Salvation Army_noted for its service ministries among poor and people suffering the dislocations that accompany war and disaster_is the most notable example. In the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Holiness Movement, important new developments in the Holiness Movement_such as the widely discussed 'Holiness Manifesto'_are thoroughly discussed, and the content has also been expanded to include information on figures from Asia and Africa to reflect the continued growth of the Holiness Movement. With a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference has information that cannot be found elsewhere.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This Manifesto is about spiritual warfare; it is about being Christian in the midst of an anti-Christian world. It is about exposing not only the sins of those around you but exposing your own sins, too. It is about recognizing one’s real enemy, the devil, and not treating others you don’t agree with as enemies.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Holy Man’s Manifesto This book is the product of many Pastors’ Meetings, Men’s Meetings and conferences in various places during a period of time. The Holy Man’s Manifesto is an attempt to help men of God from every walk of life accept who they are and take an engaging role of being leasers of their homes, churches and communities by using the tools in this book. Holiness is not a concept or a good idea from God but His ideal and only way of life. Every city is the reflection of the men who live in it. Holy men are accountable and responsible for the condition of their city. Our churches and communities do not need only men, but holy men who fear God and have, not just the gut, but the Spirit to represent Him well on every layer of our society, before the Light goes completely out in every major city. The time to be holy is now or never.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Ted Turnau introduces readers to the major themes of his in-depth Oasis of Imagination by collaborating with Ruth Naomi Floyd. Floyd brings her distinctive experience as a Christian artist to make this a practical guide that distils the "why" and "how" of embracing Christian creative cultural engagement. Why does the church need to pay more attention to the imagination? How can we, in this day and age, best enter our cultural conversations for the common good? How can the local church better support its creatives, enriching its own imaginative life and building bridges to their neighbours and the wider culture? Whether you are a Christian artist or creative yourself, or an everyday Christian searching for a path beyond the culture wars and Christian bubble, Imagination Manifesto will give you biblical foundations, practical pointers, discussion starters, and inspiration for "planting oases" in today's culture.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Some have said the America is the most religious industrialized country in the world.6 The power of politics driven at least in part by religious concerns was demonstrated dramatically in the November election. But are people at this grassroots level- the ones most likely to suffer the consequences of political deafness regarding climate change- do they really understand the truth of the approaching environmental storm? If not, perhaps they will best learn new ways of thinking (and living) from those whom they hold in highest regard, their religious leaders, thinkers, teachers, writers and communicators. With "The Greening of Religion" we hope to have added to a life-saving public conversation, perhaps even started some conversations. And we hope those conversations will lead to actions which can shelter us from the inevitable, and perhaps turn us from calamity, even here at the last minute.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The command to "be holy" is one of Christian life's most challenging and misunderstood commands. Three scholars from the Wesleyan tradition constructively argue for a "neo-holiness" that encourages the pursuit of Christian perfection while incorporating historic understandings of grace and the work of the Holy Spirit.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Holiness is a topic that is rarely discussed in Christian colleges and seminaries, yet the rationale for the existence of these institutions is that they provide environments where people can grow into the image of Christ. In other words, these places exist so that Christians can grow in holiness. The essays collected in this volume treat the theme of holiness from a variety of theological disciplines, all with the purpose of disabusing Christians from mischaracterizations of the theme as well as offering a vision for what the Christian life could look like. In both simple and profound ways, holiness is a liberal art; it is the Christian way and shape of life.
