Ten Hours Until Dawn

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the midst of the Blizzard of 1978, the tanker Global Hope floundered on the shoals in Salem Sound off the Massachusetts coast. The Coast Guard heard the Mayday calls and immediately dispatched a patrol boat. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat was in as much trouble as the tanker, having lost its radar, depth finder, and engine power in horrendous seas. Pilot boat Captain Frank Quirk was monitoring the Coast Guard's efforts by radio, and when he heard that the patrol boat was in jeopardy, he decided to act. Gathering his crew of four, he readied his forty-nine-foot steel boat, the Can Do, and entered the maelstrom of the blizzard. Using dozens of interview and audiotapes that recorded every word exchanged between Quirk and the Coast Guard, Tougias has written a devastating, true account of bravery and death at sea, in Ten Hours Until Dawn.

With nothing keeping Jim Heston tied to Texas, he treks northwest to California, determined to carve a life out of the untamed and often brutal wilderness. With jobs sparse in the small nearby town, Jim turns to hunting to keep fed, only to stumble upon an even more elusive prey: gold. And when he spies Jim exchanging gold at Bidwell’s Bar on more than one occasion, Cord believes he’s finally struck it rich. But when Cord threatens Jim’s family, he learns the hard way that all that glitters isn’t gold. Deadly Dances In The Bornean Rainforest

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

For two years Rajindra Puri lived and hunted with the Penan Benalui people in the rainforest of eastern Borneo in Indonesia. Here he reports on Penan hunting techniques, the knowledge required to be a successful hunter, and the significance of hunting for Penan communities. A hunt offers the opportunity for younger Penan to learn crucial survival skills, knowledge of the environment, local geography, genealogy, history, and beliefs and values. Songs and stories recount hunting adventures and legends, while ceremonial dances demonstrate the coordination and agility required of the expert hunter. The author makes a case for using active participant-observation, in conjunction with standard ethnobiological research methods, for documenting non-verbal knowledge. Included here are 21 months of hunting records and comprehensive appendices on game species and ethnobiological data. This work will be useful to anthropologists, conservation biologists, and those interested in Indonesian ethnobiology.

Vital Diplomacy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Brazil, where forest meets savanna, new towns, agribusiness and hydroelectric plants form a patchwork with the indigenous territories. Here, agricultural work, fishing, songs, feasts and exchanges occupy the Enawenê-nawê for eight months of each year during a season called Yankwa. Vital Diplomacy focuses on this major ceremonial cycle to shed new light on classic Amazonian themes such as kinship, gender, manioc cultivation and cuisine, relations with non-humans and foreigners, and the interplay of myth and practice, exploring how ritual contains and diverts the threat of violence by reconciling antagonistic spirits, coordinating social and gender divides, and channelling foreign relations and resources.

Reflections Of A Country Boy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A book for everyone brought up in the 1950/60s and one which every modern-day parent should read and then pass it on, or read, to their children. It is a light-hearted book, but with serious implications at times, of the upbringing of a young boy, the author, on a North Lancashire farm, and of his life experiences gained. It portrays traditional farming as a way of life of the time, in which every family member was expected to contribute in some way, shape or form, for the smooth running of operations. It also covers the author’s introduction to the many and varied country pursuits and pastimes which he enjoys to this day. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes sombre, but never boring, the author transports us through the many and varied situations he encountered in his formative years. By today’s standards, the freedom he was given by his parents, to roam and explore the area surrounding his home, would not be countenanced. More’s the pity, for a better upbringing and stress-free way of living for a youngster would be hard to envisage.
