BOOK EXCERPT:
A “chilling . . . stunning thriller” from the Edgar Award–winning author of Exercise in Terror (Booklist). It is 1957, and Jean Kaiser is pretending to sleep. When her parents go to bed, she’ll turn her radio on low, and groove to Elvis. But from her parents’ room, she hears something strange—her mother calling her name in a choking, terrified voice so chilling that Jean assumes it can’t be real, and wills herself to sleep. When she awakens in the morning, the nightmare has come true—a killer has slaughtered her parents in their bed. More than two decades later, Jean has done her best to move past her childhood trauma, parlaying a degree in psychology into a position as the host of a radio call-in show. One night, an anonymous caller shakes her to the core when he brings up details that remind her of her parents’ murder. When Jean and her daughter, Angie, get home, they find their pet parakeet crushed to death over Jean’s bed. Her parents’ killer has reemerged ready to tie up loose ends. The nightmare never ended, and now Jean and Angie must fight—or die.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Despite the widely differing perspectives held by those who work in higher education, there is one goal upon which all educators and educational leaders agree: students should leave college stronger than they came. Now more than ever, today's students come to college with unique intellectual, emotional, relational, and spiritual challenges. They need more than appropriate curricula, programs, facilities, and resources. Educating college students well requires a concern for and commitment to a holistic vision of their care. This volume examines the calling that Christian educators—in both curricular and cocurricular settings—share in relation to the students they serve. Join this unique blend of experienced practitioners and researchers, including Miroslav Volf, Sharon Daloz Parks, and John Foubert, in considering how we can best nurture our students toward health, wholeness, and purpose.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"This is a book about moral choice and courage. It is not, however, an abstract work of moral philosophy or psychology. Rather it is an exploration of the choices made by real individuals faced by moral quandaries. Monroe and her students interviewed people who faced moral dilemmas to see what motivated them to make difficult moral choices. These ranged from public officials dealing with issues of honesty and equity in public policy, to individuals facing private difficulties as well as people who choose to focus their lives helping those in need. What explains a courageous choice? Monroe argues that moral courage comes from one's understanding of their identity. As she found in her previous work on rescuers of Jews during the holocaust, the people she interviews in this book felt that they had no choice but to take a courageous stand. Monroe explores how this identity develops through the life stories of these individuals"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
At a time when China is once again facing a major turning point in its direction, I firmly believe that my academic dispute with Wang Hui is in no way a personal or left-right dispute. Wang Hui's grand narrative about the Chinese revolution and the Chinese century is meant to provide a new legitimate basis for one party to rule forever, to place world history in the value system of the Chinese revolution, and to shape the Chinese revolution and its regime into the ultimate source and ultimate judge of universal justice in the world. There is no doubt that Wang Hui's new theoretical proposition is not only far from the basic idea of liberalism, but also far from the political democratic position that the Western left-wing tradition has always insisted on. Since liberal scholars have automatically given up head-on confrontation with Wang Hui, it is time to end Wang Hui's theories, which have never been subjected to comprehensive and systematic academic criticism in China's intellectual and intellectual spheres for nearly thirty years. Therefore, at such a time, it would be an unforgivable dereliction of duty for liberals to fail to take the initiative, as Raymond Aron did, to undertake the historical mission of criticizing barbaric ideologies–totalitarianism and statism– and to hold fast to the basic virtues given to intellectuals by providence. As Arendt said, "the storm of ideas is not characterized by knowledge, but by the ability to distinguish good from evil, beauty from ugliness. And this may indeed prevent disaster in that rare moment of crisis."
