BOOK EXCERPT:
The purpose of this volume is to ask and propose a positive answer to the question: "Can we attend to the personhood of individuals within systems and cultures which are mass oriented?" One of the most interesting changes in contemporary thinking has been the emphasis on the unique person. While the distinction between a person (a unique rational being) and individual (one of several similar things) has long existed, it is in the twentieth century that we seem to have become fully conscious of this distinction. There is good reason for such as emphasis today. Repeatedly in this century the case of the person was deemed less important than some policy. Innocent persons slaughtered in the name of some "ism," political bombings and kidnappings, and mass unemployment to name but a few. The cause of our dehumanization seems to be the reduction of the individual person to a part of the political, economic or religious system.

BOOK EXCERPT:
· What is organizational culture? · Do organizational cultures influence the performance of health care organizations? · Are organizational cultures capable of being managed to beneficial effect? Recent legislation in the United Kingdom has led to significant reforms within the health care system. Clinical quality, safety and performance have been the focus for improvement alongside systematic changes involving decision-making power being devolved to patients and frontline staff. However, as this book shows, improvements in performance are intrinsically linked to cultural changes within health care settings. Using theories from a wide range of disciplines including economics, management and organization studies, policy studies and the health sciences, this book sets out definitions of cultures and performance, in particular the specific characteristics that help or hinder performance. Case studies of high and low performing hospital trusts and primary care trusts are used to explore the links between culture and performance. These studies provide examples of strategies to create beneficial, high-performance cultures that may be used by other managers. Moreover, implications for future policies and research are outlined. Cultures for Performance in Health Careis essential reading for those with an interest in health care management and health policy including students, researchers, policy makers and health care professionals.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I am an artist, and I have been for most of my life. I am the one who is supposed to be feeding people’s souls, but I have failed to do so. I have extended that care into a vision for culture at large. #2 The key to recognizing genesis moments is to remember that every moment is fresh. Creativity applied in a moment of weakness and vulnerability can turn failure into enduring conversation, opening new vistas of inspiration and embodiment. #3 Generative thinking is fueled by generosity because it so often must work against a mindset that has survival and utility in the foreground. Generative values are given to us as a gift by our parents and predecessors, and they grow in conversation with the past and in our intention to speak and create so as to cultivate the values of multiple future generations. #4 The path of generosity is not an end in itself, but a contribution to the greater good. Generative principles flow out of generational blessing toward creativity. But many people look back on what can seem like generational curses rather than blessings.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Inclusive education faces a critical challenge rooted in an outdated paradigm that treats students as fixer-upper projects rather than recognizing their holistic needs. The prevalent toolbox approach, governed by frameworks like MTSS and RTI, tends to prioritize immediate academic gains, neglecting the intricate tapestry of students' identities, cultural nuances, and unique strengths. This myopic strategy fails to foster sustained growth and well-being, undermining the true potential of inclusive education. Addressing this pervasive issue, Decolonizing Inclusive Education: Centering Heartwork, Care, and Listening, provides a groundbreaking solution. By shifting the focus to heartwork, care, and listening, the book pioneers a decolonizing praxis in inclusive education. It challenges the prevailing tool-centric model and advocates for an approach that embraces the diverse identities, funds of knowledge, and cultural understandings of students. The book delves into topics such as classroom stories, engaging families, funds of knowledge, and decentering whiteness, offering a comprehensive guide to transform inclusive education into a space that not only acknowledges but celebrates the holistic well-being and growth of every student.

Culture in Clinical Care: Strategies for Competence explores theory and practice to define and describe the multidimensional nature of culture and its interaction with an individual’s experience in the development of beliefs, values, and behavior. The newly updated Second Edition examines cultural beliefs related to health and wellness and how these beliefs and their associated actions affect intervention strategies. Based on ethnographic methods, strategies for culturally sensitive assessment and intervention are defined and illustrated, with ample opportunities for reflection and practice. Going beyond traditional fact-centered and attitude-centered approaches, Culture in Clinical Care, Second Edition describes the ways in which culture emerges as individuals interact with each other in physical and social environments. This one-of-a-kind text by Dr. Bette Bonder and Dr. Laura Martin provides health care practitioners and students with chapter objectives, critical thinking questions, interdisciplinary case studies and examples, numerous activities to build observation and interaction skills, comprehensive references and online resources, and images.
