This book addresses the development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in and by companies and the consequent need for private sector AI regulation. Highlighting the challenges to responsible business conduct and considering stakeholder interests, it identifies ethical concerns and discusses AI standards and AI norms. Based on this needs-based analysis, the author chooses relational economics as a suitable approach to develop a theoretical AI governance model. In doing so, AI is conceptualized within relational economics in the form of an autopoietic system. Building on this theoretical contribution, the book specifies the governance adaptivity of the relational AI governance approach for an unregulated AI market and for the case of the pending E.U. AI regulation, and complements it with inductively conducted categories that summarize the main research streams in AI ethics.

This book focuses on the legal regulation, mainly from an international law perspective, of autonomous artificial intelligence systems, of their creations, as well as of the interaction of human and artificial intelligence. It examines critical questions regarding both the ontology of autonomous AI systems and the legal implications: what constitutes an autonomous AI system and what are its unique characteristics? How do they interact with humans? What would be the implications of combined artificial and human intelligence? It also explores potentially the most important questions: what are the implications of these developments for collective security –from both a state-centered and a human perspective, as well as for legal systems? How can the matrix of obligations and rights of this new legal personality be construed and what would be the repercussions for the international community? This book presents an interdisciplinary exploration of digital sovereignty in China, which are addressed mainly from political, legal and historical point of views. The text leverages a large number of native Chinese experts among the authors at a time when literature on China’s involvement in internet governance is more widespread in the so-called “West”. Numerous Chinese-language documents have been analysed in the making of this title and furthermore, literature conceptualising digital sovereignty is still limited to journal articles, making this one of the earliest collective attempts at defining this concept in the form of a book.
