Spain has been the favourite destination for Erasmus students from all over Europe since 2001 and the top country within the EU for outgoing Erasmus students (over 65,000 a year and over 625,000 since the launch of the programme), which points to the unquestionable interest, both for institutions and Spanish students, in the internationalisation of education.

This volume offers an overview of the context of internationalisation in which plurilingualism becomes a strategic axis for universities and in which university language centres serve as the key instrument to implement this process. It focuses on three key areas in which language centres are working together with governments across Europe, namely: language policy and internationalisation; specific training for the university community; and language testing and accreditation. The contributors to this book are all policy makers, instructors or evaluators from university language centres involved in the internationalisation of their institutions through languages. They teach and evaluate not only ‘regular’ students, but students with very specific needs, such as lecturers delivering content courses in English, students in mobility programmes or administrative staff in contact with international students. The book also includes the presentation of the first national higher education language policy in Europe, developed by the Language Policy Commission of the Board of Rectors of Spanish Universities and endorsed by all public and private universities in Spain.

The growing interest in the problems of integrated foreign language teaching and professional disciplines is manifested in the formulation of new concepts and approaches, which at the moment are controversial. The lack of a common conceptual framework of integrated education in the system of higher professional education in different countries manifests itself in the attempts of researchers to either completely eliminate the achievements of their colleagues in this area or, without any scientific and practical justification, mechanically transfer foreign experiences in their conditions. Examining Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Theories and Practices is a cutting-edge research publication that investigates the different approaches and models of progressive technology within linguodidactics and the methodologies for teaching foreign languages. In 2015, Laura Rumbley put forward the notion that higher education—in a highly complex, globally interdependent world—would be wise to commit to an agenda of "intelligent internationalization" (I2). I2 turns on the notion that "the development of a thoughtful alliance between the research, practitioner, and policy communities," in tandem with key decision makers in leadership roles, is essential for institutions and systems of higher education seeking sustained relevance and vitality through their internationalization efforts. Does "intelligent internationalization" make sense? What is faulty, misguided, or missing from this analysis that could be strengthened through further consideration? On the other hand, what speaks to its value as an idea or agenda to advance the way that internationalization is understood and enacted in the world? These issues will be addressed in this book which builds on a 2018 Symposium on Intelligent Internationalization.

The goal of this Special Issue is to bring together state-of-the art articles on applied linguistics which reflect investigation carried out by researchers from different parts of the world. By bringing together papers from different perspectives, we hope to be able to gain a better understanding of the field. Hence, this Special Issue intends to address the study of language in its different dimensions and within the framework of multiple methodologies and formal accounts as used by researchers in the field. This Special Issue is dedicated to research in any area related to applied linguistics, including language acquisition and language learning; language teaching and curriculum design; language for specific purposes; psychology of language, child language and psycholinguistics; sociolinguistics; pragmatics; discourse analysis; corpus linguistics, computational linguistics and language engineering; lexicology and lexicography; and translation and interpretation.

Universities around the world have embraced internationalisation at the policy level, but struggle to put that policy into practice, particularly at the coalface of teaching and learning. To date, faculty voices have been largely silent in the literature on internationalising the curriculum. This book begins to address this gap. This timely volume sets out the author’s novel concept of the Organic model of internationalisation, developed using participants’ perceptions, lived experiences, and recommendations for a better sustainable future of HE, and explores its broader application in the context of higher education. Using the qualitative IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) approach, chapters showcase the lived experiences and subjective perspectives of individuals around the paradox that internationalisation presents, the distorting effects of institutional power, and the market- and ethics-based concerns of internationalisation in higher education.
