A lady desperate to escape. A hot-tempered earl in the wrong place and wrong time. An escape that sends sparks flying and turns into an attraction that neither can deny. A lady desperate to escape. Miss Evalyn Swanson is desperate to escape her stepfather and his nefarious plan to hawk her off to his vicious business partner. With time running out, she spies salvation at a house party in Lincolnshire. Salvation in the form of one hulking, brooding Scotsman that is conveniently traveling north. North, where she can disappear for good. A hot-tempered earl in the wrong place and wrong time. With his sister just married to his bitter enemy, Lachlan Ruddington, Earl of Dunhaven is in no mood to entertain the whimsical notions of a chit straight from the ballroom. Even if she’s an enchanting sprite, he has no time for anything other than quick dabbles with the opposite sex. He has an estate to right. A senile grandfather to battle. And a few more enemies he needs to mete out justice to. An escape not quite according to plan. Try as he might, Lachlan discovers the draw of Evalyn undeniable—though he’ll refuse it for as long as he can. Propriety demands it. His heart that he never thought to lose to an English lass demands it. The danger that lurks around her demands it. But if they can survive, they may just discover the truest love could be the love neither one of them ever anticipated. Join the adventure today! You’ll love The Iron Earl, the first in the Valor of Vinehill series and a can’t-miss enthralling historical regency era romance by USA Today bestselling author, K.J. Jackson. Note: The novels in the Valor of Vinehill series by K.J. Jackson are each stand-alone stories and can be read individually in any order. BOOK EXCERPT:
A gripping memoir documenting one couple’s experience being imprisoned by the Japanese on a Philippine college campus during World War II. This is a gripping eyewitness account of internment during World War II in the Philippines. Van Sickle and her husband, Charles, were among a group of foreigners who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Trapped in Manila after its surrender to the Japanese in 1942, they were incarcerated in the vast forty-eight-acre campus of Santo Tomás University, the only place in the city large enough to accommodate all the prisoners. The university grounds were enclosed on three sides by high concrete walls and iron bars; Santo Tomás turned out to be “a made-to-order concentration camp.” Every day spent on this seventeenth-century campus was a struggle for survival. Van Sickle offers a fascinating, detailed, and insightful account of life at Santo Tomás. The prisoners—5,000 at the outset—were thrown on their own resources for food and the simplest types of comfort. The internment camp became a kind of school of human relations: additional curricula forced upon the prisoners, the author says good-humoredly, were Entomology, the science of bed bugs; Structural Engineering, the art of sleeping on a cot; Chemistry, or washing clothes; Philosophy, or waiting in line; Industrial Engineering, opening a can; Physical Education, or the missing drink. As they suffered together, the internees managed to form a community of sorts that sustained them until their liberation in February, 1945. Van Sickle’s story is unique and personal narrative, and her retelling of the camp’s liberation is dramatic and powerful. Praise for The Iron Gates of Santo Tomas “Involving memoir of a woman caught with her husband behind enemy lines after the fall of Manila in WW II. . . . A valuable addition to the history of WW II.” —Kirkus Reviews “The story is unique and fascinating to read. . . . A well-written memoir.” —Library Journal

BOOK EXCERPT:
William Herbert, Third Earl of Pembroke, 1580-1630, was the 'uomo universale' of the Early Stuart Age. A prominent courtier in the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I, he was the most important patron of the arts of the early seventeenth century, and almost certainly the person to whom Shakespeare dedicated his Sonnets. He was, in fact, the patron of almost every great literary and artistic figure of the period; Ben Jonson, Inigo Jones, John Donne, and George Herbert. Pembroke was an astute and powerful politician, the greatest electoral manager of the time, the wealthiest nobleman in the country, a powerful industrial entrepreneur, Chancellor of Oxford University and an indefatigable promoter of colonial enterprises. This major new work, the product of many years of research, is the first full length study of Pembroke. It has been exhaustively researched with all the extant manuscript and printed materials studied. Pembroke's poetry and patronage are fully discussed, his political life analysed, and his business activities both at home and abroad fully investigated.
