News in Early Modern Europe presents new research on the nature, production, and dissemination of a variety of forms of news writing from across Europe during the early modern period.

This volume offers the first fully-focused study on the language and discourse employed in historical accounts of discovery, exploration and settlement, stretching from the 16th to 19th centuries, and covering areas as far afield as the Americas, Africa, India, Australasia and the Arctic. In the examination of the discourse (and accompanying paratextual features when present), the contributors make use of qualitative and quantitative analysis in order to identify the manner in which the knowledge disseminators of the time adapted, created and exploited the language of the genre in which they were communicating to inform or persuade contemporary readers. The chapters focus, in particular, on six genres: namely, print news, manuscript correspondence, journals, dictionaries, travel books and geography schoolbooks. Knowledge dissemination is mediated through these six different genres, but, in each case, the genre in question conveys three common aspects of knowledge dissemination: the factual, the personal and the ideological. The focus is, as such, on how domain-specific knowledge is mediated in specialized and popularizing discourse in order to address different stakeholders.

This book explores the content of The Moderate, a radical newspaper of the British Civil Wars published in the pivotal years 1648-9. This newsbook, as newspapers were then known, is commonly associated with the Leveller movement, a radical political group that promoted a democratic form of government. While valuable studies have been published on the history of seventeenth-century English periodicals, as well as on the interaction between these newspapers and print culture at large, very little has been written on individual newspapers. This book fills a void: it provides an in-depth investigation of the news printed in The Moderate, with reference to other newspapers and to the larger historical context, and captures the essence of this periodical, seen both as a political publication and a commercial product. This book will be of interest to early-modern historians and literary scholars.

Distinctive in its markedly interdisciplinary approach, this book presents studies dealing with literary, cultural and linguistic history both in Europe and in the US, bringing together scholars from different fields, while highlighting features that are shared among their contributions. European Contexts for English Republicanism offers new perspectives on early modern English republicanism through its focus on the Continental reception of and engagement with seventeenth-century English thinkers and political events. Looking both at political ideas and at the people that shaped them, the collection examines English republican thought in its wider European context during the later seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a number of case studies, the contributors assess the different ways in which English republican ideas were not only shaped by the thought of the ancients, but also by contemporary authors from all over Europe, such as Hugo Grotius or Christoph Besold. They demonstrate that English republican thinkers did not only act in dialogue with Continental authors and scholars, their ideas in turn also left a long-lasting legacy in Europe as they were received, transformed and put to new uses by thinkers in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. Far from being an exclusively transatlantic affair, as much of the established scholarship suggests, English republican thought also left its legacy on the European Continent, finding its way into wider debates about the rights and wrongs of the English Civil War and the nature of government, while later translations of English republican works also influenced the key thinkers of the French Revolution and the liberals of the nineteenth century. Bringing together a range of fresh and original essays by British and European scholars in the field of early modern intellectual history and English studies, this collection of essays revises a one-sided approach to English republicanism and widens the scope of study beyond linguistic and national boundaries by looking at English republicans and their continental networks and legacy.
