The Line Which Separates

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nations are made and unmade at their borders, and the forty-ninth parallel separating Montana and Alberta in the late nineteenth century was a pivotal Western site for both the United States and Canada. Blackfoot country was a key site of Canadian and American efforts to shape their nations and national identities. The region?s landscape, aboriginal people, newcomers, railroads, and ongoing cross-border ties all challenged the governments? efforts to create, colonize, and nationalize the Alberta-Montana borderlands. The Line Which Separates makes an important and useful comparison between American and Canadian government policies and attitudes regarding race, gender, and homesteading.øFederal visions of the West in general and the borderlands in particular rested on overlapping sets of assumptions about space, race, and gender; those same assumptions would be used to craft the policies that were supposed to turn national visions into local realities. The growth of a white female population in the region, which should have ?whitened? and ?easternized? the region, merely served to complicate emerging categories. Both governments worked hard to enforce the lines that were supposed to separate "good" land from "bad," whites from aboriginals, different groups of newcomers from each other, and women's roles from men's roles. The lines and categories they depended on were used to distinguish each West, and thus each nation, from the other. Drawing on a range of sources, from government maps and reports to oral testimony and personal papers, The Line Which Separates explores the uneven way in which the borderlands were superimposed on Blackfoot country in order to divide a previously cohesive region in the late nineteenth century.

Structure Preserving Energy Functions In Power Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A guide for software development of the dynamic security assessment and control of power systems, Structure Preserving Energy Functions in Power Systems: Theory and Applications takes an approach that is more general than previous works on Transient Energy Functions defined using Reduced Network Models. A comprehensive presentation of theory and applications, this book: Describes the analytics of monitoring and predicting dynamic security and emergency control through the illustration of theory and applications of energy functions defined on structure preserving models Covers different facets of dynamic analysis of large bulk power systems such as system stability evaluation, dynamic security assessment, and control, among others Supports illustration of SPEFs using examples and case studies, including descriptions of applications in real-time monitoring, adaptive protection, and emergency control Presents a novel network analogy based on accurate generator models that enables an accurate, yet simplified approach to computing total energy as the aggregate of energy in individual components The book presents analytical tools for online detection of loss of synchronism and suggests adaptive system protection. It covers the design of effective linear damping controllers using FACTS, for damping small oscillations during normal operation to prevent transition to emergency states, and emergency control based on FACTS, to improve first swing stability and also provide rapid damping of nonlinear oscillations that threaten system security during major disturbances. The author includes detection and control algorithms derived from theoretical considerations and illustrated through several examples and case studies on text systems.

Exploiting Children

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

America’s citizens want children to receive a high-quality education in clean, orderly and safe schools staffed with quality teachers, support staff and courageous educational leaders. In many communities, such a school experience is something the students will never have. Why? One or more members of the governing board desire to use their elected position for personal gain. They are Exploiters. Some desire to exploit a little. Others crave total domination of the school system and become the petty tyrants of education. Whether the exploitation is minimal or extreme, exploitative board members are highly detrimental to the effectiveness of the local school system. They destroy teamwork, morale, careers and many times entire school systems. They steal a high-quality education from children. The predominant governance structure of public education dictated by law is seriously flawed. What thousands of citizens and educators strongly desire for their schools can be discarded and replaced with the unscrupulous will of one individual. Exploitive school board members must be understood and stopped. The governance structure of public education must be changed.
