Renowned for his literary style as well as his musical scholarship, Nicolas Slonimsky wrote many program notes and articles for newspapers and other periodicals, in addition to his well-known books. These shorter writings, edited by Slonimsky’s daughter, Electra Yourke, are collected for the first time in this excellent introduction to the classical repertoire, from Bach to Shostakovich. Arranged chronologically by composer, the chapters begin with biographical sketches and go on to describe some of each composer’s most popular and important works.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The most radical and divisive composer of the twentieth century, Arnold Schoenberg remains a hero to many, and a villain to many others. In this refreshingly balanced biography, Mark Berry tells the story of Schoenberg’s remarkable life and work, situating his tale within the wider symphony of nineteenth- and twentieth-century history. Born in the Jewish quarter of his beloved Vienna, Schoenberg left Austria for his early career in Berlin as a leading light of Weimar culture, before being forced to flee in the dead of night from Hitler’s Third Reich. He found himself in the United States, settling in Los Angeles, where he would inspire composers from George Gershwin to John Cage. Introducing all of Schoenberg’s major musical works, from his very first compositions, such as the String Quartet in D Major, to his invention of the twelve-tone method, Berry explores how Schoenberg’s revolutionary approach to musical composition incorporated Wagnerian late Romanticism and the brave new worlds of atonality and serialism. Essential reading for anyone interested in the music and history of the twentieth century, this book makes clear Schoenberg changed the history of music forever.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Where does architecture belong in the larger scheme of things? Is it a liberal art? Is it related to painting, music, medicine, or horse training? Is it timeless, or does it have a beginning? To pursue such questions, Stephen Parcell investigates four historical definitions of Western architecture: as a techné in ancient Greece, a mechanical art in medieval Europe, an art of disegno in Renaissance Italy, and a fine art in eighteenth-century Europe. These definitions situated architecture within larger classifications of knowledge, establishing alliances between architecture and other disciplines. They also influenced elements of architectural practice that we now associate with three characters (designer, builder, and dweller) and three things (material, drawing, and building). Guided by current architectural questions, Parcell examines writings in these historical periods and focuses on practical implications of texts by Hugh of St Victor, Leon Battista Alberti, and Etienne-Louis Boullée. Four Historical Definitions of Architecture shows how the concept of architecture and elements of architectural practice have evolved over time. Even the word "architecture" has ambiguous roots.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In Great Composers in Watercolor, artist Douglas Lew offers authentic, refreshing, and imaginative portraits of the great composers of seven historical periods. The urge to connect with a famous person's face and his life is a universal desire. Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven are just a few of the many composers Lew highlights in his collection of watercolor paintings, combining a brief history of each musician with a likeness of their face created using minimal brush strokes and inspired colors. With a free flowing, organic, and transparent style, Lew uses the elements of shape, texture, and color to enliven and enrich the rendition. Suitable for a coffee table or as a gift for music and art lovers alike, Great Composers in Watercolor brings to life the faces behind the beautiful music appreciated for centuries. "Doug Lew captures the era and melodic essence of each composer ... each work is a historical gem." -James Riccardo, concert violinist and music director of the Health Sciences Orchestra of the University of Minnesota "Doug's paintings bring these composers to life with the faithfulness all great musicians strive to achieve in performance." -David Herring, bass trombone, Minnesota Orchestra
