BOOK EXCERPT:
An investigation into the transformation of publishing in the United States from a field in which Jews were systematically excluded to one in which they became ubiquitous “From the very first page, this book is funnier and more gripping than a book on publishing has any right to be. Anyone interested in America’s intellectual or Jewish history must read this, and anyone looking for an engrossing story should.”—Emily Tamkin, author of Bad Jews In the 1960s and 1970s, complaints about a “Jewish literary mafia” were everywhere. Although a conspiracy of Jews colluding to control publishing in the United States never actually existed, such accusations reflected a genuine transformation from an industry notorious for excluding Jews to one in which they arguably had become the most influential figures. Josh Lambert examines the dynamics between Jewish editors and Jewish writers; how Jewish women exposed the misogyny they faced from publishers; and how children of literary parents have struggled with and benefited from their inheritances. Drawing on interviews and tens of thousands of pages of letters and manuscripts, The Literary Mafia offers striking new discoveries about celebrated figures such as Lionel Trilling and Gordon Lish, and neglected fiction by writers including Ivan Gold, Ann Birstein, and Trudy Gertler. In the end, we learn how the success of one minority group has lessons for all who would like to see American literature become more equitable.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, language: English, abstract: Nowadays the word 'Mafia' refers nearly all groups or gangs involved in organized crime. However, originally, Mafia meant an organized criminal organization of Italian, predominantly Sicilian, heritage. In fact, this word is a mere literary creation while the real name is 'Cosa Nostra' meaning 'our thing'. For many years the common understanding of the Mafia was strictly limited by argument on whether there even was a Mafia. In the recent decades that argument was more or less settled, and the principal argument remaining is whether or not organized crime and the Mafia are one and the same thing. According to Finckenauer: To this end, this useful primer to the phenomenon quite rightly tarts with a simple question that begs a complex answer: what is organized crime? Sometimes, the mobsters are easy to identify, a collection of ne'er-do-wells with no visible source of income but owning flashy cars and homes; involved in the staples of organized criminality, whether trafficking drugs or infiltrating legitimate businesses. The old stereotypes, which were always something of a caricature, are becoming even less applicable in the modern world. [...] In part the confusion revolves around an understanding of the real nature of organized crime that existed since the earliest days of the nation and, indeed, earlier. It is worth remembering that, organized crime achieves its status not only by the fact of groups of practitioners, but also due to the fact that organized crime is syndicate crime in which certain activities are apportioned out to the various gangs and honored in the main by these gangs. What is interesting, in the beginning and even till the 1950s, many people regarded the Mafia not as law-breaking criminals but as role-models and protectors of the weak and the poor, as the state offered no protection to the lower

"This book both illuminates Italian literary traditions and places the Mafia in the context of Italian literature and culture. Readers will see mainstream authors like Lampedusa and Pirandello in a very different light."--Tom Benediktson, Dean of Arts and Letters, University of Tulsa.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Small Press is an annotated guide to the sources for the study of the literary small press, focusing on small press publishing since 1960 when the Mimeo Revolution occurred allowing small presses in the United States to flourish in unprecedented numbers. The guide provides a selected enumeration of sources from 1960 to 1992 about the small press phenomenon, its constituent small presses and little magazines, and its cultural and commercial significance. The volume first examines sources of current information, such as directories, indexes, guides, and trade journals. It then reviews sources on the cultural and business activities of the small press. In the end, it provides a beginning base of core secondary materials essential to librarians, scholars, book collectors, and anyone working in the field of the small press.
