BOOK EXCERPT:
The World Space Organization (WSO) has taken over NASA and its ill-fated and under-funded space station program. Adhering to the ambitious goals of the WSO, the Mayflower Project becomes an epic journey into deep space with the purpose of colonizing a planet in the star system, Tau Ceti. However, in order to send man’s living DNA through this vastness of time and space, the crew must make one supreme and morally corrupt sacrifice. Those aboard will have to reproduce across hundreds of generations, whereby all descendants must bow to the will of their ancestors in order to fulfill the Project. Culminating in the discovery of the long-forgotten truths about Earth, generation 216’s findings ultimately threaten the Mayflower Project. Breaking from traditional forms of science fiction, this strikingly original story embraces the limitations of today’s technology, proposing what might happen if we embarked on such a mission today. Departing from the norm of aliens and intergalactic warfare, The Mayflower Project takes inspiration from the human drama implicit to the journey, while being a cautionary tale of man’s inhumanity towards his fellow man.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Not on the Mayflower tells about the life of Dietrich W. Botstiber in Austria during the first part of the twentieth century. He describes an Austria of great beauty and bounty that, over those years, diminished in size, culture, wealth and prestige, due in large part to the breakup of the Dual Habsburg Empire, the 1938 Anschluss and the ensuing war. Botstiber witnessed the most unsettling times in Austrian history, and he recounts his own unhappiness in a country that offered him little opportunity to apply his technical skills and interests. Dietrich Botstiber believed that Americans did not fully appreciate the Austrian predicament leading up to World War II. His autobiography goes a long way toward imparting an understanding of the difficult social and economic conditions in Austria during this period. It also tells a story about the cultural life in Vienna during the early decades of the twentieth century, and about the lives of immigrants to the United States who managed to make significant contributions to their adopted country.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When Australian journalist Alan Villiers sailed on the last of the giant merchant windjammers in the 1920s and '30s, his writings and photographs made him famous. Villiers crewed on beautiful Herzogin Cecilie and tragic Grace Harwar, took tiny Joseph Conrad around the globe, sailed on Arabian dhows, led wartime landing craft, captained Mayflower II across the Atlantic, and inspired modern sail training and ship restoration projects. Drawn from his personal diaries, this award-winning biography of the author-adventurer reveals both his mythmaking and his achievements. It is a tribute to the greatest sailing ships ever launched – and to the extraordinary man who loved them. The book won the Mountbatten Maritime Award in 2009, and this Second Edition is fully revised. It contains over 100 photos, many of them new.
