Since the end of the Cold War and the 1990/91 Gulf war, the Middle East has been in the grip of dramatic changes. The region faces a host of problems urgently in need of solutions if a successful new world order is to be built on the ruins of the old. In this book, an international group of scholars addresses these issues and considers the options for the political and economic reconstruction of the Middle East. These essays illustrate the various ways in which women fall short of being vested with the rights and privileges that would define them as fully enfranchised citizens. They offer an in-depth examination of national legislation on personal status, penal law, labor law, nationality, and social security law. Others include indicators such as female education and employment, and many comment on the types of mobilization and activism engaged in by Middle Eastern women themselves to press for an expansion of their citizenship rights. Along with its sister volume, Citizenship and State in the Middle East, Applications and Approaches, also by Syracuse University Press, this book represents a pioneering approach to the Middle East from a citizenship perspective. This book advances a critical analysis of U. S. Middle East policy and offers alternative perspectives. It highlights areas of policy shortcomings in the wake of ongoing global and domestic changes and draws attention to the need for a new and more plausible U. S. policy. The United States and the Middle East evaluates the roots and consequences of post-World War II diplomatic and military initiatives, including the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Palestinian question, United States relations with Iran following the Iranian revolution, Irangate, the reflagging of Kuwaiti tankers, and the war led by the United States against Iraq. The important roles of U. S. media and Middle East studies and education in influencing U. S. foreign policy are also emphasized. A concluding chapter focuses on the ongoing global restructuring and the U. S. quest for world leadership in the wake of the Persian Gulf War.

In this research paper I have explored and deepened the concept, meaning and phenomenon of New World Order (NWO) through a structured approach, inspired mainly by the logical order used by Ludwig Wittgenstein, but also by the ideas of Thomas Hobbes. My aim is to achieve five key objectives: (i) to present an innovative method to build a concept starting from etymological bases; (ii) to explore the meanings attached to each individual term (new, world, order), followed by their reunification in a single concept; (iii) to examine the process of forming a concept based on three specific terms, and to analyse how they combine to create a central idea; (iv) to explore the NWO phenomenon by exposing its stages, to discover key concepts, theories and other theoretical main lines of research that contribute to its development and understanding; (v) to review the existent literature and to extract key points and lines from existing theoretical debates and identifying real examples from world politics that reflect the concept and phenomenon of NWO. By using Ludwig Wittgenstein’s method, I aimed to show not only the content and meaning of NWO as a concept, but also the process and form of its construction. The method used has the ability to offer an atomistic understanding of how complex ideas are built from their fundamental elements, revealing how they intertwine to create a solid theoretical conceptual framework. It is time to discover the concept, meaning and phenomenon of New World Order in its truest form.

For more than three decades, the Soviet Union was a major force in the Middle East, and superpower rivalry exacerbated many of the conflicts endemic to the region. The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union have fundamentally altered the rules of the game in Middle East politics, producing a new fluidity in the region, new diplomatic alignments, and new opportunities for peace. The contributors place recent developments in historical and political context, analyzing changes in Soviet Middle East policy under Gorbachev as well as evaluating developments since the demise of the Soviet Union. The evolution of Moscow's policy toward the Arab states, Israel, the P.L.O., and the U.N. is given special attention. The contributors also examine the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism in the new states of Central Asia and weigh the potential implications of this development for the Middle East. In addition, they discuss security issues related to the transfer of military technology from former Soviet republics to the countries of the Middle East.

Evolving New World Order/Disorder demonstrates the interrelationship of geography to developments of national power, cultural composition, and international complexities in the Peoples' Republic of China, the new Russia, Western Europe, and the United States. Much of the study is centered on China as the nation of the third millennium, on the new significance of the Caspian Sea region, and requirements for international cooperation in sensitive and serious problems facing the world. It also explains the changing policies of NATO and its emphasis on maintaining peace in Europe and nearby regions and relegating to the background its initial major objective of having to defend Western Europe against attack by the Soviet Union.
