This study of a hitherto neglected aspect of Liszt and his music aims to restore a balanced view of both man and artist. In contrast to the familiar portrayal of the virtuoso pianist, Liszt is considered here as a serious man of ideas: in tracing the composer's relationships and attitudes to the twin themes of revolution and religion, Paul Merrick finds much of Liszt's music, both secular and sacred, to be inspired by the same deeply felt religious conviction that also governed his private life from an early age. The first part of the book is primarily biographical and considers Liszt's reactions to the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, his relationship with the Abbe Lamennais, the Comtesse d' Agoult, Princess Wittgenstein and Wagner, and contains the first convincing explanation for the sudden cancellation of Liszt's marriage to Princess Wittgenstein. The remaining sections consider the church music and the programmatic music that is related to this.

Some of the most popular works of nineteenth-century music were labeled either "Hungarian" or "Gypsy" in style, including many of the best-known and least-respected of Liszt's compositions. In the early twentieth century, Béla Bartók and his colleagues questioned not only the Hungarianness but also the good taste of that style. Bartók argued that it should be discarded in favor of a national style based in the "genuine" folk music of the rural peasantry. Between the heyday of the nineteenth-century Hungarian-Gypsy style and its replacement by a new paradigm of "authentic" national style was a vigorous decades-long debate-one little known inside or outside Hungary-over what it meant to be Hungarian, European, and modern. Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók traces the historical process that defined the conventions of Hungarian-Gypsy style. Author Lynn M. Hooker frames her study around the 1911 celebration of Liszt's centennial. In so doing, she analyzes Liszt's problematic role as a Hungarian-born composer and leader of Hungarian art music who spent most of his life outside of Hungary and questioned whether Hungary's national music was more the creation of Hungarians or Roma (Gypsies). The themes of race and nation that emerge in the discussion of Liszt are further developed in an analysis of discourse on Hungarian national music throughout the Hungarian press in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Showing how the "discovery" of "genuine" folk music by Bartók and Kodály, often depicted as a purely "scientific" matter, responds directly to concerns raised by earlier writers about the "problem of Hungarian music," Hooker argues that the innovations of Bartók and Kodály and their circle are not so much in correcting a flawed concept of the national as in using the idea of national authenticity to open up freedom for composers to explore more stylistic options, including the exploration of modernist musical language. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók is essential reading for musicologists, musicians, and concertgoers alike.

This is the third in a set of three books following the life and achievements of Franz Liszt. This volume focuses on his final years, from 1861-1886.

The Music Division of the National Széchényi Library (Budapest) houses 78 music manuscripts and scores, with all or part of each penned in the hand of Franz Liszt, one of Hungary's most prominent native sons. The library is the primary Hungarian public collection of Liszt's works and is among the world's most comprehensive. This book details the collection, classifying the works as (i) Liszt's compositions-autograph manuscripts, manuscript copies, proof-sheets or printed copies with additions and corrections in Liszt's hand (62 items); (ii) Liszt's compositions-printed or manuscript copies with autograph dedications (10 items); and (iii) Liszt's corrections and manuscript notes in and to works by other composers (6 items). Seventy-three music examples and 20 facsimile illustrations are also included. While other catalogues have been devoted to these Liszt compositions, this is the first to take full and accurate account of the collection to date. Thorough philological data of the documents, and descriptions and evaluations among the sources of the given composition are supplied. Maria Eckhardt's insightful additions concerning performance history and Liszt's relationships with dedicatees and fellow composers, based upon her previously published research, provide an enriched understanding of the compositions and their creator.
