The history of globalization is anything but a no-frills affair that moves smoothly along a clear-cut, unidirectional path of development, eventually leading to seamless global integration. Accordingly, scholarship in the social sciences has increasingly argued against equating the history of globalization processes and transcultural entanglements with the master narrative of the gradual homogenization of the world. Examining the shifting patterns of global connections has, therefore, become the main challenge for all those who seek to understand the past, the present and the future of modern societies. And this challenge includes finding a place for the nation state. The studies presented here argue that looking at the nation state from the perspective of global entanglements opens the door for its interpretation as a dynamic and multi-layered structure that takes part in globalization processes and plays various and at times even contradictory roles at the same time.

A revisionist account of Zionist history, challenging the inevitability of a one-state solution, from a bold, path-breaking young scholar The Jewish nation-state has often been thought of as Zionism’s end goal. In this bracing history of the idea of the Jewish state in modern Zionism, from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century until the establishment of the state of Israel, Dmitry Shumsky challenges this deeply rooted assumption. In doing so, he complicates the narrative of the Zionist quest for full sovereignty, provocatively showing how and why the leaders of the pre-state Zionist movement imagined, articulated and promoted theories of self-determination in Palestine either as part of a multinational Ottoman state (1882-1917), or in the framework of multinational democracy. In particular, Shumsky focuses on the writings and policies of five key Zionist leaders from the Habsburg and Russian empires in central and eastern Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Leon Pinsker, Theodor Herzl, Ahad Ha’am, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, and David Ben-Gurion to offer a very pointed critique of Zionist historiography.

Cyprus gained independence in 1960 without a strong national identity. Citizens considered themselves Greeks or Turks, not Cypriots. As a result, the country was susceptible to external, as well as internal attacks. Ethnic pride, reinforced by proximity to both countries, inflamed the majority of the population, and was encouraged by the historic rivalry between the two homelands. This is the political salient cleavage, further emphasized by the 1960 constitution, which fortified the stronghold on each ethnic homeland by guaranteeing to maintain both Turkish and Greek customs. When I commenced this journey, international relations and comparative theories were the primary way of interpreting Cyprus's internal friction. While examining the national state as an institution, I realized their limitations, specifically while scrutinizing the 1974 Cypriot Crisis. I applied a culturally oriented comparative perspective along with game-theoretic international models in order to gain a thorough understanding and find the root cause of Cyprus's turmoil. During this process, I discovered a mechanism I now call transnational nationalism. A methodical analysis of the Cypriot Crisis of 1974 gives further insight into cultural politics, which has continued to play a powerful role in nations, such as the lands of Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Palestine, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. These nations all share a common characteristic: foreign and domestic forces attempting to achieve transnational nationalism as each group strives to maintain its national identity, leading to further division.

Of all of the books produced by Ernst B. Haas during his career, Beyond the Nation-State contains the most complete and definitive statement of 'neofunctionalism': the theory of transnational integration for which he is best known. Focusing on the International Labor Organization (ILO), Beyond the Nation-State was one of the first efforts to analyse systematically the dynamics and effects of a global international institution. Regarded as a classic in comparative politics and international relations, and among students of European integration, this book enjoyed a renaissance with the end of the cold war, reinvigorated European integration, and resumed interest in communitarian theorising about forms of global governance, which relied on a heightened role for international institutions and their associated policy communities. First published in 1964, Beyond the Nation-State was part of larger project described by others as neofunctionalism, regional integration, and soft constructivism, which animated Haas throughout his career. Beyond the Nation-State continues to provide valuable guidelines for describing and understanding contemporary IR, and is reissued with a new introduction by Peter M. Haas, John G. Ruggie, Philippe Schmitter and Antje Wiener, placing this important work in a current context.

This volume collects papers that explore institutionalisation in contemporary transatlantic relations. Policymakers, lawyers, and political scientists reflect on contemporary understandings of the process as an integration of regimes and orders from an EU perspective. The papers assess whether contemporary transatlantic relations call for a different approach to global governance with a heightened emphasis on institutionalisation.
