BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuropschology with Asians and Asian Americans Practical and Theoretical Considerations J. Mark Davis and Rik Carl D'Amato, editors The challenge of cultural competence for health providers is more than the recognition of other ethnicities: it entails the balancing of group and individual factors to apply relevant information in diagnostic and therapeutic settings. Particularly in need of culturally appropriate services are Asians and Asian Americans, populations that are diverse, growing, and underserved by Asian practitioners. Neuropsychology with Asians and Asian Americans takes cultural neuroscience to new levels in its variety and usefulness. Focusing on the largest groups of Far East and Southeast Asian descent, this leading-edge reference examines the influence of culture on psychological processes and identifies sociocultural factors as they influence neurological aspects of client presentation. This expert coverage goes beyond well-known constructs of "collectivism" and "family orientation" toward establishing an evidence base crucial to understanding, assessing, and treating Asian and Asian American clients, including: Linguistic factors and language assessment of Asians. Society and acculturation in Asian and Asian American communities Mental illness from Asian and Asian American perspectives. Understanding cognitive differences across the lifespan: comparing Eastern and Western cultures Clinical interviews and qualitative assessment with Asian clients Neuropsychological test selection with Asian clients Unique in its scope and detail, Neuropsychology with Asians and Asian Americans is a necessary resource for neuropsychologists and rehabilitation specialists as well as social workers and clinical, counseling, and school psychologists.

The Neuropsychology Handbook

BOOK EXCERPT:

ìA fantastic and monumental contribution to our field.î ñ Ralph M. Reitan, PhD "The field of neuropsychology has many specialized books on particular diseases, but there is always a need for a general text to cover the major aspects of neuropsychology from neuroanatomy to assessment to practice issues. This is one such book that attempts to provide comprehensive coverage of the field." --Doody's In the last decade, the number of books, courses, training opportunities, and journals dealing with clinical neuropsychology has greatly increased. Demand for a complete reference in the field is growing as practitioners in private practice, the court system, and the medical field continue to make discoveries and advance our knowledge of the brain system and how it affects our everyday lives. In order to address this urgent need, Drs. Horton and Wedding have edited this Third Edition of the classic Neuropsychology Handbook. In its pages are reviews of all the major areas in which clinical neuropsychologists work: the foundations of clinical neuropsychology brain structure and function neurological disorders psychiatric disorders diagnostic decision-making symptom validity testing neuroimaging behavioral change following traumatic brain injury disability determination rehabilitation planning, and more Very specialized areas of practice such as clinical neuropsychology with children, clinical neurotoxicology, and neuropsychological assessment in criminal law cases also receive chapters.

A Handbook Of Geriatric Neuropsychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A Handbook of Geriatric Neuropsychology: Practice Essentials (Second Edition) brings together experts in the field to integrate the knowledge and skills needed to understand and treat older adults who are experiencing problems with memory and other thinking skills. With three new sections, including coverage of other conditions beyond neuropsychological disorders, special assessment contexts, and more on interventions and ethics, as well as multiple new chapters, and significant updates from the first edition, this book provides a strong foundation for clinicians, educators, and researchers invested in the wellbeing of older adults. The impact and experience of aging, like the practice of neuropsychology, evolves over time. Similarly, through advances in science and professional techniques, neuropsychological practice has continued to evolve. Neuropsychological evaluation remains the most effective method of diagnosing age-related cognitive decline, cognitive difficulties that result from psychological factors, and other related disorders, as well as determining how the various disorders impact functioning and quality of life. This book explores these areas and offers state-of-the-art assessment techniques to assess changes in cognition and behavior and to distinguish normal changes from neuropathology. This book is a go-to resource and key reference for psychologists who serve older adults with known or suspected cognitive problems, as well as those who are invested in promoting brain wellness. It provides much of the information needed to establish and improve foundational and functional competencies in geriatric neuropsychology and establish practices that are personally and professionally rewarding, all aimed at promoting the understanding and wellbeing of older adults.

Handbook Of Cross Cultural Neuropsychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Historically, relatively few investigations in neuropsychology have been sensitive to the analysis of cultural variables. This handbook will assist the neuropsychologist interested in cultural competence and help increase understanding of the link between cultural competence in assessment and intervention and good treatment outcomes. The handbook authors provide an in-depth discussion of the current status of multicultural training in neuropsychology; specific information on diverse groups (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), assessment instruments, and clinical populations (HIV infected, seizure disorders, brain injuries); and unique analysis of immigration patterns, forensics, and psychopharmacology. This volume is the first to summarize the cultural data available in neuropsychology. A valuable resource for clinical neuropsychologists, school psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.

The Effects Of Early Environmental Experiences On African American Neuropsychological Test Performance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuropsychologists do not yet understand the sources of ethnic group variation in cognitive test scores. While many factors may influence neuropsychological test performance, environmental factors, such as educational and home histories, are likely to be significant contributors. There is considerable evidence from human and animal research that qualitative aspects of early living environments are related to brain development and contemporaneous measures of neurocognitive functioning. There were three main goals of the present study: (a) to assess relationships between neurocognitive functioning and retrospective reports of early environmental/educational experiences in both African-American (AA) and Caucasian (CA) adults; (b) to identify those environmental variables which characterize AA subjects with relatively poor test performance; and (c) to determine whether adjusting cognitive test scores for hypothesized differences on these early environmental factors reduces the ethnic group performance disparity. Measurements for the present study included cognitive testing data and detailed retrospective early environmental histories on 100 neurologically normal adults (75 AA, 25 CA). Results indicate that: (1) consistent with previous research, the two ethnic groups differed significantly on their cognitive test performance; (2) the two ethnic groups demonstrated small, but significant, differences in their early environmental histories; (3) retrospective accounts of early environmental experiences were significantly related to absolute performance on cognitive tests in both groups; (4) the qualitative measures of early environmental experiences accounted for some variance in cognitive test scores, above and beyond that attributable to age, gender, and years of education completed; but (5) covarying age-, education-, and gender-corrected cognitive scores for early environmental influences did not substantially affect the ethnic group performance disparity. It was concluded that the early environmental influences retrospectively-assessed in this study are related to adult cognition, but that the relationship is less strong than that between cognition and years of education. Further, the relationship between these environmental variables and test performance is not unique to AAs, and does not appear to be clinically useful for interpreting AA neuropsychological test results. Finally, the results demonstrate the remaining need for ethnicity specific neuropsychological normative data, and for further research to better understand environmental influences on AA neuropsychological test performances.
