The New And Changing Transatlanticism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The European Union and the US are currently negotiating the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), with potentially enormous economic gains for both partners. Experts from the European Union and the US explore not only the groundwork laid for TTIP under the "New Transatlanticism," but also the key variables – economic, cultural, institutional, and political – shaping transatlantic policy outcomes. Divided into four parts, Part I, consisting of three chapters, contextualizes the transatlantic relationship with an historical survey, contemporary foreign relations and policy, and cultural dynamics. Together, these chapters provide the background for understanding the evolving nature of the EU–US relationship. Part II of this volume focuses on governance and comprises two chapters – one on transatlantic governance and the other administrative culture. Part III consists of six policy chapters: competition, trade, transport, mobility regimes, financial services regulation, and GMOs. Part IV, consisting of three chapters, explores prospects and challenges associated with transatlanticism, including the TTIP. The last chapter concludes with lessons learned and future challenges with respect to policy convergence; the nature of the EU–US relationship; power, resources, and bargaining within the transatlantic partnership; and, an assessment of the future of deeper cooperation and integration. This insightful account into policy cooperation between the EU and the US is a welcomed resource for policy specialists oriented toward comparative public policy wishing to enter the arena of Transatlantic Studies.

Transatlantic Perspectives On The Euro

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A Brookings Institution Press and the European Community Studies Association publication The European economic and monetary union has changed the structure of international monetary relations fundamentally. In this book two experts--one European, the other American--offer transatlantic perspectives on the ramifications of the monetary union and the launch of the euro. C. Randall Henning examines selected American views on Europe's monetary union, and looks at the political, economic, and institutional interests of the United States as they are affected by the creation of the euro. He examines the external monetary policymaking machinery of the union and discusses the relationship of the monetary union to international institutions, particularly the meetings of the G-7 finance ministers and central bank governors and the International Monetary Fund. Henning is generally sympathetic to European integration, supportive of the monetary union, and persuaded of the importance of international cooperation. Pier Carlo Padoan presents a European view of the role of the euro in the international system. He looks at the euro as a potential global currency and examines the transition phase between a regional currency and a global currency. Central to this is an analysis of the appropriate exchange rate policy for the euro. He also considers euro-dollar relations and the prospects for transatlantic cooperation. C. Randall Henning is a professor at The American University and a senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics. Pier Carlo Padoan is a professor at the University of Rome and the College of Europe.

Transatlantic Governance In The Global Economy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This important book examines transatlantic economic relations in the 1990s, and in particular efforts by the United States and the European Union to establish new forms of governance to cope with increasing economic interdependence. The authors explain the development of transatlantic cooperation, culminating in the multi-leveled governance mechanisms of the New Transatlantic Agenda. They assess, as well, central questions about the nature of transatlantic governance, as reflected in competing international relations theories of intergovernmental, transgovernmental (technocratic), and transnational (civil society) relations. Bringing together leading scholars from political science and law, the book provides a rich mix of analytic and normative perspectives that will be an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and policymakers alike.

The Expansion Of Sustainability Through New Economic Space

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The return of Maori land to a productive role in the so-called Knowledge Economy entails the innovation and diffusion of technologies relevant to the sustainable development of this land. Sustainable development requires substantive changes to current land and resource use to mitigate environmental degradation and contribute to ecological and sociological resilience. This book takes concerns for cultural resilience that have arisen as political-economic strategies converge within the global New Economic Space and will show how the self-determined participation of Maori growers in this space can paradoxically lead to an expansion of the Traditional Economic Space of Maori. This expansion is directed by Maori cultural logics, located in Maori territories but seeking innovations from an amorphous 'core'. The interface between a global economy and the localities of a Maori cultural economy is defined by the interrogation of innovations, through the innovators. A malleable collectivity of actants passes through this porous interrogation border, enrolled by Maori as components of their resilience strategies and therefore the endurance of Maori culture.

Europe S Economic Crisis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"How should eurozone countries tackle their current crisis? How did it come about, and how may it be resolved? What does it mean for Europe's historic experiment in political and economic integration? Will the eurozone crisis be remembered as the moment when the EU finally cracked? Or as the spur to a more integrated and competitive Union? When the euro was introduced, it was heralded as the symbol of a unified Europe. Not enough consideration was given at the time, however, to how member economies could adjust to differences in economic performance or how to manage debt crises. Today, amidst a broader North Atlantic financial and economic crisis, the eurozone is in turmoil, beset by stresses and strains that could challenge Europe's very construction. The Center for Transatlantic Relations and the Cournot Centre asked the authors in this timely volume to address these questions. Their varying perspectives are invaluable to anyone seeing to understand the roots of Europe's economic crisis and how it may affect Europe's future"--Publisher's description.

An Accidental Brexit

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book analyzes how the EU referendum in the United Kingdom came to pass and what the foreseeable consequences are for the UK, Europe, US and world economy. The Brexit decision represents a momentous event for Europe, which weakens the EU and shifts the global balance of power. Welfens argues the EU has lost its appeal and is not in keeping with the twenty-first century, which is being shaped by Asia and digital innovations. The subject of immigration from EU countries played a key role in the Brexit decision, with an anti-EU campaign that was profoundly biased. The estimated impact of the referendum was deeply distorted by the broadly inadequate information produced by the Cameron government, which omitted the expected 10 percent loss in income caused by leaving the EU. With this this information, there could have been a clear pro-EU majority. In the absence of a second referendum, one cannot know what the British electorate really wants. Both the Brexit decision and new President of the United States Donald Trump's approach to European disintegration dynamics also raise serious questions about the future of transatlantic relations.

New Perspectives On Transatlantic Relations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The post-World War II order of an Atlantic West based on common values emerged from a complex, conflict-ridden Atlantic history and established itself as a powerful actor in world politics. This volume critically addresses the topics, processes, and problems of transatlantic relations from a multi-disciplinary angle, and marked by a worldwide pandemic. It thematizes the political, economic, and cultural dimensions from the seventeenth century to today and reflects them in categories of order and disorder, cooperation and conflict, convergence and divergence to get a deeper understanding of the present critical state of transatlanticism: the American retrenchment and the vanishing American vision of 'world leadership' in terms of 'America First' politics, the respective consequences impacting on the political and military development of the NATO alliance, and the Euro-American relations.
