In this paper we present the new FAO analytical database on aggregate physical investmentflows and capital stock in agriculture, forestry and fishing for 206 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015. the methodology used to deal with missing data, and the measurement issues underlying its development. Building on previous research programmes held at the World Bank and at the FAO, we compile long time series of the agricultural investment-to-value added ratio, which we employ to compute agricultural investment flows.

Documentation for a new cross-country database on agricultural investment and capital, along with compatible measures for manufacturing and aggregate investment and capital.In this paper, Crego, Larson, Butzer, and Mundlak document a new database on sectoral investment and capital, providing details about sources of investment data and the method used to convert those data series into capital stock series. They also provide a copy of the computer program used to implement the method. The data set is available for electronic distribution and will soon be posted on the World Wide Web.They broadly define agricultural capital and calculate separate series for fixed capital as well as capital embodied in livestock and treestock.This data set - a product of Rural Development, Development Research Group - was developed as part of a larger study of the determinants of agricultural growth. This paper was designed as a reference that the authors hope will encourage others to make use of the data and expand its content. Companion papers by the authors discuss alternative methods and discuss the connection between capital accumulation and growth. Between 2001 and 2012, Latin America and the Caribbean’s (LAC) agriculture saw its best performance of the last 30 years. Given the importance of agricultural R&D investment to sustain agricultural growth in the future, this study looks at the state of agricultural R&D investment in LAC, and analyzes the role that this investment played in the performance of agriculture in recent years. This is done by developing a new approach for the estimation of knowledge stocks that allow us to obtain R&D elasticities and measures of return to R&D investment that avoid some of the major problems encountered in the literature that uses econometric methods.

How can we achieve FAO’s original vision of a world free from hunger and malnutrition? The report sheds some light on the nature of the challenges that agriculture and food systems are facing now and throughout the 21st century, and provides some insights as to what is at stake and what needs to be done. What emerges is that “business as usual” is no longer an option but calls for major transformations in agricultural systems, in rural economies and in how we manage our natural resources. The report was undertaken for the quadrennial review of the FAO Strategic Framework and in preparation for the Organization’s Medium-Term Plan 2018-2021.

It provides market projections for national, regional and global supply and demand of major agricultural commodities, biofuel and fish.

The Agricultural Outlook 2020-2029 is a collaborative effort of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It brings together the commodity, policy and country expertise of both organisations as well as input from collaborating member countries to provide an annual assessment of the prospects for the coming decade of national, regional and global agricultural commodity markets.
