BOOK EXCERPT:
Since the first pacemaker implantation in October 1958 by Senning and Elmqvist in Sweden, cardiac pacing for bradycardia has become a well-established therapy. The impressive growth of clinical experience and the rapid development of pacemaker devices have greatly contributed to this situation. The electrical therapy appears to be so easy that insertion of the lead and its connection to the pacemaker generator requires little effort, skill or insight. However, after implantation a patient's condition seldom remains stable, which requires a flexible pacing program to cover all new cardiac events, and broad insight from clinician and technical colleagues. The Pacemaker Clinic of the 90's teaches anatomical and electrophysiological aspects of pacing, supports the prevention of complications, and points to new developments in the field. Apart from classical indications for cardiac pacing, the book discusses the validity of the latest indications, supporting the cardiologist and the associated professional in selecting the appropriate pacing mode and pacemaker follow-up in individual patients. The Pacemaker Clinic of the 90's will be a helpful companion for years to come.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Great innovations take place within great institutions. Founded in 1819, Toronto General Hospital (TGH) is one of Canada’s oldest hospitals and has created a nurturing environment for early Canadian innovations in heart surgery. The Heartbeat of Innovation tells the story of the brilliant surgeons who worked there and the hospital environment that provided an incubator to the many people – skilled perfusionists, dedicated nurses, and pioneering cardiologists – who participated in the revolution in heart surgery that took place along University Avenue in Toronto. Supported by historical records, hospital archives, personal memoirs, and interviews, this book is an extensive and descriptive account of the seemingly inexorable development of cardiac surgery at this leading academic health science centre. It pursues several themes: the complexity of this surgical specialty, its generally male-dominated nature, the trend toward teamwork in practice, and the evolution and incorporation of original research into this branch of healthcare. These strands are woven together to demonstrate how the TGH has evolved into such a dominant leader in the competitive and demanding field of cardiac surgery. Canadian hearts may beat with pride at the knowledge that one of the major stories in modern medicine took place here – and continues here.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The classic medical textbook tends to be overly technical, excessively detailed, profusely referenced, and the antithesis of enjoyable reading. With the expectation of many hours of hard work, I lvas unprepared for the pleasure that lay ahead. This book is what we in the United States call a « sleeper ». Without pomp or solemnity it captures you with a light-hearted style that subtly belies its sophistication. The authors have indeed mastered the art of simplicity, combining profound knowledge with an airy format, to a degree that is hard to emulate. All the salient features o. fpacing are presented here, from history and pathology to complications and long-range follow-up. Perhaps it is a mark of excellence, rather than a confession of my personal ignorance, to say that there is scarcely a section that did not provide me with a new bit of information or a new insight. Permanent pacing o. f the heart is so common nowadays, at least in the more affluent sections 0. 1' the world, that almost every person must know of someone with an implanted pacemaker. In the United States, where there are more than 100, 000 new implants each year, almost every sizeable hospital has a pacemaker implantation service and almost every physician in a related field is interested in doing this surgery. All that should really be required is that the surgeon make himself an expert.
