BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a unique write about a sheltered church girl curious about life, that became a teenage mother turned drug dealer, turned drug user in the cold windy, war torn, poverty stricken streets of Chicago's West Side. With the loss of her children to the system she thought she had nothing left but to die..."Rock, blows, Park! Rang out like happy slogans of advertisements from dealers to fiends..." With death and the police lurking close by he closed her eyes to retract: How did I get here?...and the ongoing presence of failure, loss and disdain licking at her heels she saw no way out. Had God somehow forgotten about her? Nothing seemed to matter... Be inspired by her unfiltered and uncensored writing of poetry where she found her lesson and her blessing!

The Paradigm Of Justice

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book deals with the fascinating debate over the concept of justice proposed by two contemporary thinkers, namely, John Rawls and Amartya Sen. Justice means what is just, but how do we know what is just? What would be the viable criterion to legitimize justice? Is justice objective or subjective? Is justice a matter of ontological issue or an issue of realization? What would be the paradigm of justice? These are some important issues discussed in the book. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Reassessing The Paradigm Of Economics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

When President Reagan and Prime Minister Thatcher adopted the neoliberal doctrine as the paradigm of economics, there was no evidence that the move would have been successful, but thirty years on, the recurrent crises that culminated in 2008 suggest a serious mis-match between expectations and outcomes: a re-examination of the paradigm is in order. This book focuses on Milton Friedman’s formulation of the neoliberal doctrine, and analyses two aspects that were essential to turning it into a fully-fledged paradigm: the attribution of scientific status to positive economics, which led to informing public policies on the requirements of the market; and the characterisation of economic freedom as capable of promoting political freedom, which led to identifying free market with democracy. The book exposes Friedman’s methodological argument for attributing positive economics scientific status as a failure, and his characterisation of economic freedom as a delusion; it identifies in the emergence as the mainstream in economics of the neoclassical synthesis, which borrowed from Walras’ the mathematical treatment of equilibrium but not the ethical and social framework in which it was inscribed, a development that facilitated the transition from the Keynesian to the neoliberal paradigm. Dr. Mosini shows that the gigantic bail-outs carried out courtesy of the public purse, which institutionalised the practice of collectivising losses while keeping profits private, were no accident, but the consequence of the rethinking of the function of lender of last resort according to Friedman’s conception of rationality in relation to risk, combined with his interpretation of the 1930s recession. The book concludes that the neoliberal paradigm has served the interests of the economically powerful social strata it was designed to benefit extremely well, but that the deep, and deepening, injustice it has brought about calls for a complete rethinking of the paradigm of economics according to ethical principles respectful of human values. This book should be of interest to students and researchers of Political Economy, Economic Methodology, History of Economic Thought and Philosophy.

The Paradigm Shift Towards Energy Sustainability

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since 2004, the Summer Academy 'Energy and the Environment' has brought together practitioners and policy makers from countries worldwide to engage in an interdisci-plinary discussion on practical solutions to problems of energy law. The fifth annual Summer Academy focuses on 'The Paradigm Shift towards Energy Sustainability'. As is evi-dent through the sheer scope of the articles presented and reprinted in this volume, discussion at the 2008 Summer Academy was rich and varied in ideas and interpretations. One thing emerged especially clearly: policy priorities must be designed to encompass a multidisciplinary approach to energy sustainability. Not only must renewable energy solutions be promoted but incentives must also be increased for greater fossil fuel energy efficiency and energy conservation. Experiences from both developed and developing countries are provided to illustrate needed sustainable energy solutions at the local level to address the global climate crisis.
