BOOK EXCERPT:

* Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. As you read this summary, you will discover what the Higgs boson is and the issues that surrounded its discovery. You will also evaluate the colossal means that had to be deployed to find it and how the existence of this particle, theorized by Peter Higgs in the 1960s, could be proven. You will also discover : what are the properties of the Higgs boson and its field; what are the particles that currently make up the "standard model"; how the LHC, the world's most powerful particle gas pedal, works; what are the particularities of CERN, which hosts it; that the announcement of the discovery of the Higgs boson shook the scientific community. In July 2012, an announcement shook the world of physics. The existence of the Higgs boson is confirmed by CERN, the European Council for Nuclear Research. To detect this particle, a particle gas pedal with a diameter of 27 km, the LHC, built under the Franco-Swiss border, and a budget of 7 billion euros were needed. Here is the story of this discovery and the explanation of its stakes. *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!

Tales Of The Quantum

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Everybody has heard that we live in a world made of atoms. But far more fundamentally, we live in a universe made of quanta. Many things are not made of atoms: light, radio waves, electric current, magnetic fields, Earth's gravitational field, not to mention exotica such a neutron stars, black holes, dark energy, and dark matter. But everything, including atoms, is made of highly unified or "coherent" bundles of energy called "quanta" that (like everything else) obey certain rules. In the case of the quantum, these rules are called "quantum physics." This is a book about quanta and their unexpected, some would say peculiar, behavior--tales, if you will, of the quantum. The quantum has developed the reputation of being capricious, bewildering, even impossible to understand. The peculiar habits of quanta are certainly not what we would have expected to find at the foundation of physical reality, but these habits are not necessarily bewildering and not at all impossible or paradoxical. This book explains those habits--the quantum rules--in everyday language, without mathematics or unnecessary technicalities. While most popular books about quantum physics follow the topic's scientific history from 1900 to today, this book follows the phenomena: wave-particle duality, fundamental randomness, quantum states, superpositions (being in two places at once), entanglement, non-locality, Schrodinger's cat, and quantum jumps, and presents the history and the scientists only to the extent that they illuminate the phenomena.

The Declaration Of Independence God And Evolution

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this book, Simon Perry has brought together a discussion of politics, philosophy, religion, and science by using the Declaration of Independence as a backdrop. He questions whether Jefferson was motivated by God. Is there a role for religion in our government? Is God real or a fantasy? Is the Good Book really good? Why has man turned to God to achieve eternal life? Does the mythicism of creation prevail over evolution? Is man indoctrinated at an early age to accept God unconditionally? These are but a few of the questions that he deals with. As you read, you will discover others. He spent five years researching this book and it relies heavily on the great scholars of religion, science, and politics. This book lays bare our cognitive distortions of who we are and where we came from.

Space Time And Spacetime

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this book, Lawrence Sklar demonstrates the interdependence of science and philosophy by examining a number of crucial problems on the nature of space and time—problems that require for their resolution the resources of philosophy and of physics. The overall issues explored are our knowledge of the geometry of the world, the existence of spacetime as an entity over and above the material objects of the world, the relation between temporal order and causal order, and the problem of the direction of time. Without neglecting the most subtle philosophical points or the most advanced contributions of contemporary physics, the author has taken pains to make his explorations intelligible to the reader with no advanced training in physics, mathematics, or philosophy. The arguments are set forth step-by-step, beginning from first principles; and the philosophical discussions are supplemented in detail by nontechnical expositions of crucial features of physical theories.

At The Edge Of Uncertainty

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“Engaging . . . touches on advanced computing, essential differences between men and women, the power of the will to live, mysteries of the cosmos and more.” —The Washington Post The atom. The Big Bang. DNA. Natural selection. All are ideas that revolutionized science—and all were dismissed out of hand when they first appeared. The surprises haven’t stopped in recent years, and in At the Edge of Uncertainty, bestselling author Michael Brooks investigates the new wave of radical insights that are shaping the future of scientific discovery. Brooks takes us to the extreme frontiers of what we understand about the world. He journeys from the observations that might rewrite our story of how the cosmos came to be, through the novel biology behind our will to live, and on to the physiological root of consciousness. Along the way, he examines the gender imbalance in clinical trials, explores how merging humans with other species might provide a solution to the shortage of organ donors, and finds out whether the universe really is like a computer or if the flow of time is a mere illusion. “Absorbing . . . scintillating . . . the edgy edge of scientific investigation presented with verve.” —Kirkus Reviews “Mind-bending . . . Brooks handily works his way through these thorny problems, highlighting current research and researchers along the way.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Galaxy Formation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Delineating the huge strides taken in cosmology in the past ten years, this much-anticipated second edition of Malcolm Longair's highly appreciated textbook has been extensively and thoroughly updated. It tells the story of modern astrophysical cosmology from the perspective of one of its most important and fundamental problems – how did the galaxies come about? Longair uses this approach to introduce the whole of what may be called "classical cosmology". What’s more, he describes how the study of the origin of galaxies and larger-scale structures in the Universe has provided us with direct information about the physics of the very early Universe.

Our Universe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Did God create life, or did the world spontaneously appear? Drawing on meticulous research into the scientific and religious realms, Our Universe is a detailed study of the origin of the universe, life on Earth, and the destiny of mankind. Biophysics professor Faiz M. Khan combines both faith and science to present a balanced overview of a highly controversial topic. Khan explores the scientific analysis of creation with knowledge-based dialogue about the most modern scientific thought on the beginnings of the universe, cosmic evolution, and biologic evolution; and he contrasts these with the creationist view held by the world's major religions. Concise and compelling, Our Universe provides an unbiased and comprehensive view of some of philosophy's most debated topics and serves as a thoughtful springboard for further discussion. Khan's discourse also reflects one man's painstaking quest for an answer to a fundamental question at the very core of our existence.
