Proceeding from Josef A. Jungmanns groundbreaking book of the same title, this volume gathers new work from fifteen renowned scholars on christological and trinitarian themes in prayer and worship. Eastern and Western traditions, Catholic and Protestant, ancient and contemporary are all represented in this record of the 2005 meeting of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Collectively, these practitioners and theologians, from their varied settings, grapple with the competing ideas and expressions of christological and trinitarian doctrine in meaningful liturgy.

Half a century after the Second Vatican Council called for the active participation of the laity in the liturgy, a comprehensive theology of what liturgical participation actually means remains elusive. While most sacramental studies have highlighted the role and action of Christ, the conciliar reform and the theology that emanated from it call for a deeper trinitarian understanding of the liturgy and sacraments. Most approaches to liturgical theology are anthropocentric: the study of liturgy is primarily focused on what we, the worshipers, do. Thomas F. Torrance and James B. Torrance offer a trinitarian and christocentric approach. This informs not only the "why" of worship and not simply the "what" or "how" of worship, but centers on the One whom we worship. Most significantly, it fully recognizes the key role of the humanity of Christ as the ascended High Priest who alone offers the perfect worship and through whom alone we are enabled by the Spirit to worship God.

The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studies series, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Space contains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West.
