The Names Of The Gods In Ancient Mediterranean Religions

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From Greece to Palmyra, Tyre or Babylon, the names of the gods, like 'Thundering Zeus', 'Three-faced Moon', 'Baal of the Force' or the enigmatic YHWH, reveal their history, family ties, fields of competence and capacity for action. Shared or specific, these names bring to light networks of gods: the Saviour gods, the Ancestral gods, the gods of a city or a family. Names tell stories about the relationship between men and gods, gods and places, places and cultures and so on. They show how gods travel and spread, how they appear and disappear, how they participate in the political, social, intellectual history of each community. Through the study of divine names, the twelve chapters of this book unfold a gallery of portraits that reveal the changing aspects of the divine throughout the ancient Mediterranean.

Eleazar And The Messiah

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

My book presents the four gospels from the perspective of another eyewitness- a man named Eleazar. Eleazar is the Aramaic name for Lazarus who is an historical character in the Gospel of John. I believe, along with a minority of New Testament Scholars, that Lazarus was the principle author of that gospel. As such, he was certainly an eyewitness to Jesus' ministry in Judea and perhaps even Galilee. I tried to write this book by keeping that narrator , Eleazar in the background because I don't want it to read primarily as a first person novel. Actually, I do and I don't. I say that because it is a lot more than an historical novel. At times, it certainly reads like a novel but the scholarly element is always present. I do this be quoting most of the passages from the the four gospels and portions of Acts. All the quotes are in italics so the reader is sure they are from the New Testament. There are also numerous footnotes which are used to explain said passages. Eleazar is basically my sounding board as he reacts to the gospel story. He is actually myself and the reader as we struggle to understand the gospel message and its challenges. My aim in my ministry is to get people to read the Bible, particularly the gospels. This book gives them the opportunity to do that but in a more relaxed and convenient way. My book is not just for Catholics but everyone, regardless of their denomination. I respect all protestant denominations and have learned a great deal from many of them. My approach is that of a scripture scholar where-in I do not espouse a particular doctrine but merely let the words of scripture speak for themselves.

Summa Theologica Volume 3 Part Ii Second Section

BOOK EXCERPT:

"The Summa Theologica is the best-known work of Italian philosopher, scholar, and Dominican friar SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS (1225 1274), widely considered the Catholic Church s greatest theologian. Famously consulted (immediately after the Bible) on religious questions at the Council of Trent, Aquinas s masterpiece has been considered a summary of official Church philosophy ever since. Aquinas considers approximately 10,000 questions on Church doctrine covering the roles and nature of God, man, and Jesus, then lays out objections to Church teachings and systematically confronts each, using Biblical verses, theologians, and philosophers to bolster his arguments. In Volume III, Aquinas addresses: faith and heresy charity peace and war mercy, anger, and justice prayer truth and much more. This massive work of scholarship, spanning five volumes, addresses just about every possible query or argument that any believer or atheist could have, and remains essential, more than seven hundred years after it was written, for clergy, religious historians, and serious students of Catholic thought."

Confessing And Believing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Confessing and Believing, Trevor Hart takes readers on a guided tour of the Apostles' Creed, one of the most ancient, universally recognized, and important statements of faith ever penned by the Christian Church. The Creeds' lasting value is not owed simply to its age--it has identifiable roots in the earliest baptismal ceremonies of the earliest Christians--but because, as Hart's careful interpretation demonstrates, the Creed is as comprehensive in its scope as it is concise in its testimony. While the Creeds' intrinsic values make it ideal for regular use in worship, Hart capitalizes on the Creed's structure and highly concentrated nature to provide a framework for teaching the essentials of Christian belief. Hart reveals that there is far more to the Creed than ancient statements about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Church. Hart employs the Creeds' twelve clauses to reveal the vibrant theology behind, in, and in front of the Creed. His interpretation of the Creed is not just an historical exercise, i.e., to discover what Christians once believed, but to understand "what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all"--and to do so in a way that addresses the intellectual and cultural contexts of the 21st Century. Hart's perceptive analysis reveals why the Creed has been, is, and will continue to be both confessed and believed.
