BOOK EXCERPT:
Since the first edition of The Psychology of Risk there have been enormous macro-economic and socio-political changes globally - the chaos in the world banking system and the financial crisis and recessions that it presaged; the Arab Spring and the revolutionary shifts in power in the Middle East with rippled consequences around the world; the development of ever-more sophisticated cyber-terrorism that can strike the private individual or the nation state with equal ease. Amidst these changes in the face of hazard, do the psychological models built to explain human reactions to risk still apply? Has the research over the last few years resulted in an improvement in our understanding of how people perceive and act in relation to risk? In this second edition Professor Dame Breakwell uses illustrations and current examples to address these questions and provide a totally up-to-the minute review of what is known about the psychology of risk.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Psychology and Law of Workplace Violence examines the causes, risk factors, prevention and legal issues associated with workplace violence. Previous attempts to explain these crimes are often only descriptive and do not identify the basic underlying psychological mechanisms and yet, from the largest violent acts, such as the September 11th "Attack on America," to the smallest violent workplace crime, the psychological mechanisms are the same. This landmark text offers a different perspective to the current concepts of workplace violence and will likely change the way people conceptualize violent crime. Part One of the text identifies eight underlying factors responsible for these crimes, identifies two necessary conditions for their occurrence, and develops several significant, new concepts related to the field. Part Two discusses state and federal legal issues surrounding workplace violence. Workers' compensation, employer liability and employer duties under negligence law, hiring, supervision and firing, the legal aspects surrounding premises security, employee privacy issues, the ADA, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and criminal history inquiries are but a few of the many legal topics discussed. This section is written in a practical, easy-to-understand manner and contains materials that are often available only in law libraries. The final Part Three of the text is a compendium of workplace violence case histories and includes numerous nationally recognizable incidents along with many others that have not been widely publicized. An interesting description of details surrounding each crime and its aftermath is included. What happened to the perpetrator? What happened to the victims? In addition, for many cases, how the case relates to other cases and issues that have arisen from the case are discussed. In this section, which is the largest published compilation of case history material on workplace violence to date, covers over

This fascinating and research-led textbook gives students the facts and the tools they need to engage critically with the psychological dimension of the criminal justice system. Accessibly written and packed with the latest psychological research, Forensic Psychology: Fact and Fiction is an engaging and wide-ranging exploration of both foundational and contemporary issues. The book prepares students to weigh up evidence and arguments, and reach their own conclusions about the issues and questions that have led them to study forensic psychology. Forensic Psychology: Fact and Fiction gives students all they need to get to grips with debates about the link between mental fitness and criminal responsibility, the purposes and effectiveness of punishment, and the use of police force, and others. It places psychology at its heart, combining research with legal perspectives to give the full picture. Drawing on global research and examples, students are given insights into what differs and what remains the same across jurisdictions and borders.
