BOOK EXCERPT:
In The Reconciling Wisdom of God: Reframing the Doctrine of the Atonement, Adam Johnson, already a leading scholar of the atonement, considers God’s redemptive work in Christ through the atonement as an act of God’s infinite wisdom. In making this crucial turn, Johnson is able to speak to proponents of the various atonement theories and move the discussion forward in a new direction, grounded in the truth of God’s infinite wisdom. Genuinely reframing the debate around the atonement, The Reconciling Wisdom of God is a must-read for students of the atonement.

BOOK EXCERPT:
THIS COMPREHENSIVE, WIDELY USED TEXT by Michael Gorman presents a theologically focused, historically grounded interpretation of the apostle Paul and raises significant questions for engaging Paul today. After providing substantial background information on Paul's world, career, letters, gospel, spirituality, and theology, Gorman covers in full detail each of the thirteen Pauline epistles. Enhancing the text are questions for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter as well as numerous photos, maps, and tables throughout. The new introduction in this second edition helpfully situates the book within current approaches to Paul. Gorman also brings the conversation up-to-date with major recent developments in Pauline studies and devotes greater attention to themes of participation, transformation, resurrection, justice, and peace.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A Close Look at Atonement's Place in Contemporary Systematic Theology. In light of renewed interest in the doctrine of atonement—during which a range of "atonement models" have gained momentum among different traditions—it's important to map these models to the broader context of theological thought on this aspect of Christ's work and to show how no single approach has the complete picture. The proceedings of the third annual Los Angeles Theology Conference seek to identify the place of the doctrine of atonement in systematic theology. Locating Atonement stays away from discussion of theories of atonement, typologies of those theories, and contests among various theories. Instead, its focus is on the question: What else is there to do in atonement theology besides rehashing types and theories? The twelve diverse essays in this collection include discussions on: Atonement and the concept of punishment. Atonement and ascension. Atonement and human suffering. Atonement and covenant. Each of the essays collected in this volume engage with Scripture as well as with others in the field—theologians both past and present, from different confessions—in order to provide constructive resources for contemporary systematic theology and to forge a theology for the future.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"This volume is the fifth in a series dealing with the passion and death of Christ - symbolized by "the cross" -- in Christian theology and the arts. It examines the way the passion of Christ has been thought about by theologians and portrayed by artists and musicians in the modern and contemporary world. It examines the traditional approaches to soteriology in contrast to revisionist theologies that take up the challenge of understanding the meaning of the cross in the light of critical historical studies and modern science"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
Arthur W. Pink (1890-1953) launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink's books are taken from these yearly books (written monthly in 24 page format). This title is one of the many taken from eight of those monthly magazines. Readers will find thorough consideration of all the facets of this Biblical Doctrine of Reconciliation. Pink covers: Its Arrangement; Its Need, Its Effectuation; Its Meaning; Its Scope; and Its Reception. There are Scriptures galore cited. Undoubtedly the reader will grow rich in knowledge and in the grace of Christ. The pages are full, with probably 400 words to a page, so buyers will get their moneys worth. As an example of what a master workman like Pink does, note that he cites Romans 12:1, 2: [This verse] ''supplies an interpretation of the rites of the Law and of the reasonable part of the O. T. order of things. Thus, he who would make a covenant with God is required to give up himself wholly unto God with a sincere and firm resolution unto a new life of obedience to Him. If there is any reservation the covenant is marred in the making of it: ''Their heart was not right with Him, neither were they steadfast in His covenant'' (Ps. 78:37). Goodwin's Reconciliation by the Blood of Christ is a sermon he preached on Colossians 1:20, in which He describes the seeming impossibility of reconciling totally depraved men to a holy God. Who is sufficient for such a task? He proves that only Christ Jesus had the fitness to fill this role of perfect obedience to the Law, together with an acceptable sacrifice to propitiate the wrath of God toward men.
