BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a history of the ethnic persecution of the Rohingyas in Myanmar and their disputed ethnic and national identity. It focuses on how the crisis has morphed into a geopolitical encounter among Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar. It further explores the moral, ethnographic, and public policy issues in the humanitarian response to the crisis of the Rohingya people. The volume analyzes the question of citizenship for the Rohingyas by analyzing historical documents and interviews which chronicle the status and identity of the community and their past involvement in the government and politics of Myanmar. The authors focus specifically on the changing geopolitical context of state formation in South Asia and the tense relationships between Myanmar and its neighbours – Bangladesh, China, and India. The book examines the alliances and disputes in the South and Southeast Asia region, which are predicated on economic and strategic gains, and their impact on the Rohingya crisis. It also looks at the failure of bilateral and multilateral negotiations among these countries to adequately address or alleviate the plight of the stateless Rohingyas. This volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of international studies, peace, human rights and conflict studies, sociology, ethnic studies, border studies, migration and diaspora studies, discrimination and exclusion studies, public policy, and Asian Studies. The Rohingya Crisis

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited volume addresses the broader aspects of the political and social landscape, human rights violations, accountability and advocacy efforts, and humanitarian challenges faced by the Rohingya from Myanmar. The work brings together different voices of legal, policy, and international affairs experts to construct a framework which addresses the complex and nuanced issues comprising the Rohingya crisis. Although there is recognition that international legal mechanisms are moving forward more quickly than anticipated, these processes do not constitute standalone sustainable solutions. Myanmar’s myriad political, social cohesion, development and security challenges are likely to persist even as justice and accountability processes move forward. Thus, this book project is premised on the consensus that the international community should complement international justice mechanisms by looking toward creative and multi-faceted approaches in addition to justice and accountability. This timely contribution will be of interest to academics, researchers, development practitioners, and human rights organizations.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The purpose of this book is to critically examine the activities of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on the eve of its 20th year of existence, with a focus on its relationship to the Rohingya crisis. This book is unique in that it identifies the potential and contemporary challenges of the ICC while focusing on the relationship between the Rohingya issue and the ICC. The relationship between the Rohingya crisis and the ICC is an issue that is fraught with contemporary challenges and worth dealing with. The relationship between the ICC and non-State Parties and the relationship between the ICC and high government officials are the examples of these challenges. Its novelty is to address the relationship between the Rohingya crisis and the ICC by staying current of information. The human rights situation of the Rohingya is of high international concern. With a case pending at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), not only individual criminal responsibility but also State responsibility may be sought for the most serious human rights violations. The Rohingya crisis itself is of great international concern, and it is expected that the issues will be discussed from the perspective of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law. Therefore, the structure of this book is as follows. First, it explains the history of the Rohingya crisis. Secondly, it touches on the relationship between the Rohingya crisis and the ICC. Thirdly, the book discusses the relationship between the ongoing case of Gambia v. Myanmar at the ICJ and the proceedings of the ICC. Finally, the book concludes with an assessment of the legitimacy, effectiveness, and efficiency of the ICC in recent years.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Rohingya Crisis is now in its fifth year with no end in sight. While the international community has supported the displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh by providing humanitarian assistance, what is needed now is to investigate the short-and long-term implications of the crisis from the host country's perspective. Also, it is imperative to examine the current political situation, which was caused by the Myanmar military coup in February 2021. It has cast a dark shadow on the possibility of a negotiated repatriation. In this volume, scholars from Bangladesh and Canada have reflected upon the security situation, the pandemic’s impact on the Rohingyas, inter-group conflict, environmental impact and burden sharing aspects, the informal labor situation, NGO intervention for resilience mapping, and diaspora activities. For both academics and policymakers who work in the fields of conflict resolution and peacebuilding, this book will show how not intervening early in a crisis can have long-term consequences.

World Politics On Rohingya Crisis

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Rohingya are an ethnic, linguistic and Muslim minority group in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state. Although they have been living in Myanmar for centuries, the Myanmar government does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens of Myanmar. The Myanmar government believes the Rohingya are "illegal immigrants" or "Bengalis" who have recently entered the region. As a result, the Rohingya have not been recognized as an official ethnic minority in Myanmar since the 1982 Citizenship Amendment Act. Nowadays these people are stumbling around in different countries as stateless citizens. No country is ready to accept them as its citizens. The Rohingya have a long history of living in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Rakhine state, formerly known as Arakan state, was inhabited by members of the Rohingya Muslim and Buddhist communities. However, within the last two centuries, Arakan Kingdom was conquered by the Burmese in 1784 and then Myanmar, like India, was ruled by the Britishers for a long time. From 1824 to 1948, Myanmar was a slave of the British. The British made Myanmar a colonial state and to work there, the Britishers brought laborers from Bangladesh and different regions of India which had a large number of poor Muslims. Thus, the number of people in this region increased and these people settled permanently in the Rakhine region. After Myanmar gained independence, immigrants were not accepted by the indigenous

Facebook S Role In The Rohingya Crisis An Approach To Viral Grievances According To Collier And Hoeffler

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 1,7, Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates Facebook’s role in the Rohingya crisis. The term Rohingya is widely used to name the Muslim ethnic minority in Rakhine (also known as Arakan) State, Myanmar. Myanmar, with its prevalently Buddhist population, systematically oppressed the group (for example Rohingyas are denied citizenships, which makes it impossible for the Rohingyas to enjoy the state’s welfare system, etc.). In respond to this maltreatment, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) attacked several police stations in the Rakhine state in 2017. Myanmar’s armed forces retaliated with atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim minority so fiercely and brutally, that even the extra funded UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar (IIFFMM) reasoned that there was genocidal interest in Myanmar’s so-called anti-terrorist actions. In 2019, more than 900,000 Rohingya refugees were counted in the neighboring Bangladesh. The genocide and other mass atrocities are still on-going.

The Rohingya

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Rohingyas are one of the most persecuted ethnic minorities in the world. They used to live in the Arakan/Rakhine State of Burma/Myanmar for centuries, though it is a predominantly Buddhist country. Being victims of persecution as a result of ethnic cleansing and genocide, they started migrating to neighbouring countries from 1978, and after the massive migration August 2017 onwards, about 1.3 million Rohingyas now live in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. This book offers a comprehensive portrait of how the state becomes instrumental in producing 'stateless' people, wherein both Myanmar and Bangladesh alienate the Rohingyas as illegal migrants, and they have to face unemployment, mental and sexual abuse, and deprivation of basic human necessities. The Rohingya proposes a new framework and theoretical alternative called 'subhuman life' for understanding the extreme vulnerability of the people as well as the genocide, ethnocide, and domicide taking place in the region. With several concrete ethnographic evidences, Nasir Uddin, apart from reconstructing the Rohingyas' regional history, sheds light on possible solutions to their refugee crisis and examines the regional political dynamics, South and Southeast Asian geopolitics, and bilateral and multilateral interstate relations.
