From the interwar period until the end of the Second World War, Romania was in a kind of geopolitical labyrinth, in which it seemed to have multiple possibilities, but they all went in the same direction: the alliance with Germany at the beginning of the Second World War, the act of August 23, 1944 as it stood, and the status subsequently established by the Treaty of Paris. Throughout this period, the Romanian Army played a major role through its leaders and the sacrifice of the Romanian soldiers, and the act of August 23, 1944 was a legitimate and legal act, in which King Mihai I and the Army were the main decision makers. After a presentation of the context of Romania's entry into the Second World War, follows the description of Romania's evolution during the war, with emphasis on the attempts to conclude an armistice with the Western Allies and the role of the Army during this period. The act of August 23, 1944 is then detailed separately, highlighting the diversity of opinions on this event. My generation in Eastern Europe was caught in the middle of two revolutions (1944 and 1989), which instead of moving history ahead pushed it backward. We thus at first made a U-turn-a tortuous one, to be sure-from underdeveloped capitalism to underdeveloped socialism, but because socialism and underdevelopment are strange bedfellows,we have since discovered we were on the wrong path and are trying now to return to where we started. The drama of that generation is what this book is about.

This volume brings together a series of recent analyses spanning the whole period of Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. The essays - by Western, Russian, and East European experts - present a wide and varied picture of the period. The authors use newly available materials to investigate different aspects of Soviet-East European relations - party affairs, military and political coordination, cultural and mass media policies, as well as the crises and conflicts emerging from the relationship itself.

How is the Holocaust remembered in Romania since the fall of communism? Alexandru Florian and an international group of contributors unveil how and why Romania, a place where large segments of the Jewish and Roma populations perished, still fails to address its recent past. These essays focus on the roles of government and public actors that choose to promote, construct, defend, or contest the memory of the Holocaust, as well as the tools—the press, the media, monuments, and commemorations—that create public memory. Coming from a variety of perspectives, these essays provide a compelling view of what memories exist, how they are sustained, how they can be distorted, and how public remembrance of the Holocaust can be encouraged in Romanian society today.
