There has been an increasing interest in financial markets across sociology, history, anthropology, cultural studies, and related disciplines over the past decades, with particular intensity since the 2007–2008 crisis which prompted new analyses of the workings of financial markets and how “scandals of Wall Street” might have huge societal ramifications. The sociologically inclined landscape of finance studies is characterized by different more or less well- established homogeneous camps, with more micro-empirical, social studies of finance approaches on the one end of the spectrum and more theoretical, often neo-Marxist approaches, on the other. Yet alternative approaches are also gaining traction, including work that emphasizes the cultural homologies and interconnections with finance as well as work that, more broadly, is both empirically rigorous and theoretically ambitious. Importantly, across these various approaches to finance, a growing body of literature is taking shape which engages finance in a critical manner. The term “critical finance studies” nonetheless remains largely unfocused and undefined. Against this backdrop, the key rationales of The Routledge Handbook of Critical Finance Studies are firstly to provide a coherent notion of this emergent field and secondly to demonstrate its analytical usefulness across a wide range of central aspects of contemporary finance. This book seeks to offer a better understanding of the strategic responses to Brexit from ten small European Union (EU) member states: Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal and Slovakia. Inspired in an intersection of different streams of research, it examines the extent and the ways Brexit has impacted these countries, analysing their coping strategies to deal with the challenges raised by such a disruptive development, as well as considering the implications of their reactions to Brexit for patterns of national foreign policy Europeanization. In so doing, this volume enhances the comprehension of smaller EU member states’ foreign and security policies, offering a systematic and comparative analysis of how political and diplomatic elites in ten countries positioned themselves domestically and within the EU vis-à-vis the Brexit process. A combination of conceptual insights, valuable empirical accounts and updated knowledge on contemporary issues from such interesting set of case studies provides room for debate on the comparability of the way(s) in which different small countries have approached their Brexit strategies. All these aspects are explored with respect to states that have been relatively neglected and underexplored in the small states literature. EU law has developed a unique and complex system under which the Union and its Member States can both act under international law, separately, jointly or in parallel. International law was not set up to deal with such complex and hybrid arrangements, which raise questions under both international and EU law. This book assesses how EU law has been adapted to cope with the constraints of international law in situations in which the EU and its Member States act jointly in relations with other States and international organisations. In an innovative scholarly approach, reflecting this duality, each chapter is jointly written by a team of two authors. The various contributions offer new insights into the tension that continues to exist between EU and international law obligations in relation to the (joint) participation of the EU and its Member States in international agreements.

The Trade & Cooperation Agreement (TCA) is the treaty which regulates free trade and economic arrangements between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) post-Brexit. The treaty entered into force provisionally on 1 January 2021 and officially on 1 May 2021, and has governed trade relations between the parties since. This book brings together contributions by leading scholars in EU and international trade law, economics and political science to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary analysis of the TCA. It contextualizes the treaty and identifies several emerging political, economic, and security challenges, which serve as the background to evolving EU-UK relations. The book also unpacks the treaty's complex provisions on customs and rules of origin, investments, services and procurement, subsidies, fisheries, aviation, cooperation on energy, environment, health, social security, and on UK participation in EU programs. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the new framework of relationship between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) applicable since 1st January 2021, following the end of the Brexit transition period and the entry into force of the EU-UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement (TCA), concluded on Christmas Eve 2020. The book contextualizes the new framework of EU-UK relations, including the ongoing challenges of implementing the Withdrawal Agreement (WA), and sheds light on the new mechanisms for EU-UK cooperation both in the economic domain including free movement of goods, financial services, and mobility of persons, and in the security domain including law enforcement, defence, and data protection. The work underlines the profound differences between the new status quo compared to the legal framework applicable when the UK was still an EU member state including end of free movement of persons, financial passporting, and cooperation in foreign affairs and defence, and reflects on what the latest stage in the Brexit process means for governance, sovereignty, and the future of European integration.
