The present work offers an extensive introduction to the text and transmission of the ancient Latin version of the medical works "Therapeutica" and "On Fevers" of the great sixth-century Greek doctor Alexander of Tralles. The importance of the Latin Alexander in medieval medicine in the West is seen in the richness of both mainstream and secondary, excerpting manuscript-traditions. The tradition is such that the reconstructed Latin text promises to be a much more important witness to the Greek text than the Greek is to the Latin, and of course a reliable edition is a prerequisite for any systematic work on questions such as the provenance of the translation and the Latinity of the translator(s). The volume comprises an introduction to Alexander; an outline account of his works in Greek compared with the Latin version; a description of the Latin manuscript copies, and a proposed reconstruction of the genetic relations between them; some preliminary remarks on the Latinity of the Latin Alexander; and a sample edition, with translation, critical apparatus, and extensive notes, of the chapters on coughing at the start of Book 2.

While the principal reason for the change is doubtless to be found in the saving of trouble to busy men, who are thus spared the necessity of becoming and remaining familiar with a language other than the vernacular, yet there is much to be said in favour of a universal language for pharmacop ias and physicians' prescriptions. In these days of rapid, easy, and almost universal travelling, foreign prescriptions are much more commonly seen in this country than was formerly the case. The danger that may ensue from the dispensing in different countries of medicinal preparations known by the same name, but of different strengths, has become so well recognised that in 1902 an International Conference was held in Brussels, to which the Governments of many countries sent delegates, and at which the desirability of uniformity in the strength of certain potent medicines was agreed to and formulae accepted. A further step in the direction of obviating inaccuracies in the dispensing of foreign prescriptions would be found in the writing of those prescriptions in a universal language, Latin, by which they would be readily intelligible to the pharmacists of all countries, just as systematic descriptions of plants are written in Latin and are universally intelligible to systematic botanists.
