The first book had long been known; books IV to X, which had been discovered a short time previously, were published in 1851. But the first chapters of the fourth and the whole of the second and third books are still missing. The first four books treat of the Hellenic philosophers; books V to IX are taken up with the exposition and refutation of Christian heresies, and the last book contains a recapitulation. The work is one of the most important sources for the history of the heresies which disturbed the early Church. In addition this edition offers many fragments and an extensive appendix.

The work is structured into nine books, roughly arranged along the reigns of Roman Emperors: Book I: from the conversion of Constantine I until the Council of Nicea (312-325) Book II: from the Council of Nicea to Constantine's death (325-337) Book III: from the death of Constantine I to the death of Constans I (337-350) Book IV: from the death of Constans I to the death of Constantius II (350-361) Book V: from the death of Constantius I to the death of Julian the Apostate (361-363) Book VI: from the death of Julian to the death of Valens (363-375) Book VII: from the death of Valens to the death of Theodosius I (375-395) Book VIII: from the death of Theodosius I to the death of Arcadius (375-408). Scholars disagree on why the end is missing. Albert Guldenpenning supposed that Sozomen himself suppressed the end of his work because in it he mentioned the Empress Aelia Eudocia, who later fell into disgrace through her supposed adultery. However, it appears that Nicephorus, Theophanes, and Theodorus Lector did read the end of Sozomen's work, according to their own histories later. This volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life This edition comprises the following works: 'The Church History' or 'Ecclesiastical History' - Eusebius and Pamphilus wrote the first surviving history of the Christian Church as a chronologically-ordered account, based on earlier sources complete from the period of the Apostles to their own epoch. This "historical account" has much of Eusebius's own theological agenda intertwined with the factual text including his view on God, Christ, the Scriptures, the Jews, the church, pagans, and heretics. 'The Life of Constantine' (Vita Constantini) is a eulogy or panegyric, and therefore its style and selection of facts are affected by its purpose, rendering it inadequate as a continuation of the Church History. As the historian Socrates Scholasticus said, at the opening of his history that was designed as a continuation of Eusebius, "Also in writing the life of Constantine, this same author has but slightly treated of matters regarding Arius, being more intent on the rhetorical finish of his composition and the praises of the emperor, than on an accurate statement of facts." The work was unfinished at Eusebius' death. Some scholars have questioned the Eusebian authorship of this work. 'Oration in Praise of Constantine', an eulogy.
