The San Francisco Nexus In World War Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In The San Francisco Nexus in World War II: Freedoms Found, Liberties Lost, and the Atomic Bomb, Meza tells the story of important events in the San Francisco Bay Area that have consequences still felt to date. He traces the invention of the atomic bomb, from a speculative design for a nuclear weapon sketched on a chalkboard at Berkeley by theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer and helped made real by “Big Science” that was pioneered by his friend and colleague, experimental physicist Ernest Lawrence. During this time, Black Americans migrated to San Francisco to escape the Jim Crow South, finding new freedoms, good jobs, and a leader in a singer-turned-welder named Joseph James. Meza shows how James fought for and won an end to segregation in his union, taking a large step toward the civil rights movement. At the same time, Japanese Americans were forced from their homes by a tragically misguided presidential executive order, upheld by the US Supreme Court, illustrating the fragility of liberty in America. These events continue to shape the world today.

The Economy Security Nexus In Northeast Asia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The dynamics of Northeast Asia have traditionally been considered primarily in military and hard security terms or alternatively along their economic dimensions. This book argues that relations among the states of Northeast Asia are far more comprehensible when the mutually shaping interactions between economics and security are considered simultaneously. It examines these interactions and some of the key empirical questions they pose, the answers to which have important lessons for international relations beyond Northeast Asia. Contributors to this volume analyze how the states of the region define their ‘security’, and how bilateral relations in hard security issues and economic linkages play out among Japan, China and the two Koreas. Further, the chapters interrogate how different patterns of techno-nationalist development affect regional security ties, and the extent to which closer economic connections enhance or detract from a nation’s self-perceived security. The book concludes by discussing scenarios for the future and the conditions that will shape relations between economics and security in the region. This book will be welcomed by students and scholars of Asian politics, Asian economics, security studies and political economy.

The Nexus

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Nexus, so-named because of the operational intersection or Nexus of faith and culture, is an alphabetized manual of cultural artifacts of significance to Christians. In The Nexus, Jon Widener observes how Christianity has lost many battles over the years and how the evangelical community has been fraught with endemic anti-intellectualism. He sees an evangelical insularity taking the form of retreat and retrenchment from the comings and goings of the larger society. Dr. Widener proposes that modern Christian believers correct these deficits by exercising the exhortation of I Pet 3:15 (KJV) to always be prepared to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you. Believers should educate themselves on culturally relevant issues where there are questions of Christian morality. This is the burden and purpose of the book. Accordingly, the standard for inclusion is straight-forward. If the topic is culturally encountered and has moral implications, then it meets the threshold standard for inclusion in the work.

The U S Army And World War Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The U.S. Army and World War II is an anthology of selected papers from three international conferences held in 1990, 1992, and 1994 on the Army's role in the war. Taking the best from those meetings, Judith L. Bellafaire has organized the various presentations into four thematic categories--prewar planning, the home front, the European theater, and the Asian-Pacific theaters--reflecting the diversity of both the war and the interest of those seeking to understand its many facets. In these carefully edited papers, one will find the more conventional treatments of doctrine, strategy, and operations side by side with those focusing on military mobilization and procurement, race and gender, psychological warfare, and large-scale advice and assistance programs. Despite significant changes in military technology and the geopolitical landscape of the world since those desperate times, the human problems highlighted by the authors are not much different from many of those facing Army leaders today. Although the past can never provide the specific recipes needed for the future, experience has shown that both the basic ingredients and the manner in which they are prepared and processed have remained remarkably constant. Those grappling with the challenges of stability operations and other contingency missions in support of the Global War on Terrorism will find this collection of readings invaluable.

The Ennead Nexus

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Ennead Nexus begins and ends at edges. It is the story of a weird, dangerous, reparative journey into the beyond, sailing into mysterious mists and alternate dimensions, passing mentally and physically conditioned boundaries, wandering beyond the thick exclusive walls of the self into the inclusive openness of the non-self for nine connected souls. The first chapter, San Francisco, summer 1998, spills the reader over the rim into visionary dimensions. The last brings to closure a long Pied Piper journey of deadly hide-and-seek that culminates, as intended, in a healing. The reader follows a chase through the breadth of the western and northern United States and Canada then Europe, North Africa, and the ends of the earth to a boundary beyond which European sailors never ventured until the fifteenth century. These are individuals vibrating at a higher level of consciousness and will and moving beyond personal borders. The thrust of the narrative recounts a synchronous surreal journey of several weeks as individuals magnetically and intuitively coalesce into a group with a unified sense of direction. These are distinct individuals with deep understandings, homogeneous insights, and a dutiful collective sense. They are also a densely woven and shared fabric of lifetimes. This group and the greater Group of which they are a part consider their existential actions beneficial to both mankind and all life-forms, certainly bountiful Mother Earth herself. In an unorthodox sense, The Ennead Nexus is a love story. Individuals, becoming one, aware of a new relationship and continuity and the need to repair the total unit so as to exponentially progress, evolve into wholeness: a greater dynamic, becoming a more powerfully positive cosmic force. They feed each other. This is love: a creative quantum unity.
