Citing a lack of strong feminist voices in contemporary Canadian media, Freeman (journalism, Carleton U., Ottawa) was motivated to write this first book-length analysis of news media coverage of women's issues in Canada. The period 1966-1971 is seen as a critical period in Canadian feminist history, during which time the Canadian government appointed a federal inquiry into women's issues (the Royal Commission on the Status of Women). Freeman examines the relationship between the Commission and the media, the reporters' understandings of professional practice, and the ways in which they covered issues from the hearings and the Commission's Report. She argues that an understanding of media coverage of gender issues is the past may lead to thoughtful and effective coverage now and in the future. Accessible to a general audience. c. From the critically acclaimed, award-winning author comes a collection of uniquely inventive stories that thread the labyrinth of coincidence, chance, and connections missed and made. What happens when you run into Death in a busy train station? (You know he’s Death because when he smiles, your cell phone goes dead.) What if your lover falls in love with a tree? Should you be jealous? From the woman pursued by a band of bagpipers in full regalia to the artist who’s built a seven-foot boat out of secondhand copies of The Great Gatsby, Smith’s characters are offbeat, charming, sexy, and as wonderfully complex as life itself.

Does a child come wailing into this world with the patterns that define it already beating in the blood? Do daughters ever believe that mother knows best and can a father come to respect the skills of a son? This collection of stories explores the ties that bind the generations together. It dips into the quiet beauty and the horrors of keeping those bonds intact. There’s lust and loyalty, joy and exploitation, innocence and trust, but deep in the heart of each story — from daughter to father perhaps, or mother to son — there is always the spark of love.

Author-artist Manjula Padmanabhan returns with ten stories: five new, five old, some dark, some funny, all edgy. A vampire visits New Delhi, a space traveler returns to her ancestral home, a character from an ancient epic is transported into the future... To each story Padmanabhan brings an unexpected twist, a touch of satire, a whiff of cynicism, a delicious undercurrent of dark humour. Drawing on her earlier, highly acclaimed anthology, Hot Death Cold Soup, and adding new stories to it, Padmanabhan presents a potent and sometimes disturbing collection that will leave readers asking for more. Published by Zubaan.

Handsomely equipped with a comprehensive introductory historical essay, editor's notes and selected bibliography, this distinguished anthology is a model of genre research. These previously untranslated stories, published from 1871 onward, offer reading virtually unknown to most American (and many German) readers. Some authors combine scientific and philosophical issues, like Kurd Lasswitz in his witty tale "To the Absolute Zero of Existence: A Story from 2371, " while others, as in Erik Simon's 1983 title story, pose psychological puzzles involving alien phenomena. Though the earlier stories in particular demand painstaking reading, all of them repay it with rewarding insights into German and Austrian culture and the many possible uses and misuses of science.
